Barb breaks mould
By AMANDA LULHAM
AMERICAN Barb Lindquist broke the 17-year-old stranglehold of Australians to win
the Devonport triathlon in Tasmania yesterday as Queenslander Chris Hill tightened
his grip on the national series with victory in the men's race.
Lindquist, the training partner of world champion Nicole Hackett, raced to a
convincing victory in the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run race in Tasmania
with her finish time of 2hrs: OOmin.36sec.
In doing so she became the first non-Australian to win one of the oldest races in this
country with Hackett finishing second and Victorian Emma Carney third. ,
"It was a very challenging course and for me a victory I am very happy about,"
Lindquist said.
"We had a couple of minutes lead off the bike and at one time people would have run
me down but today I felt very strong."
Hill became the first athlete this season to win two rounds of the national circuit
which culminates in Mooloolaba in April.. The young Queenslander, who trains with
Olympian Miles Stewart, produced a blistering solo run to take the line honours in the
men's race in 1hr:48min;44s.
