Oklahoma City Dolls

Note: Much of the information in this section comes from a photocopy of a team program/yearbook provided by the Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma City. I would also like to thank Ms. Vinca Williams for the pictures that are included on this page.

Some Preliminary Facts

· One day in the early 1970s, Hal and Mike Reynolds of Oklahoma City read about a well-attended women's football game between the Toledo Troopers and the Dallas Bluebonnets. This inspired them to form their own women's football team.

· The Oklahoma City Dolls Football Club, Inc. was founded in March 1976.

· Seventy-five women turned out for team tryouts in 1976. Thirty-five women made the team.

· The team's trainer was Teresa Mercer.

Year by Year History

1976

1976 won-loss-tied record: 10-1-1
The highlight of the Dolls' inaugural season was a 14-8 overtime victory over the Toledo Troopers, the first defeat ever suffered by the latter team.
The Dolls' only regular season defeat was a 7-0 loss to the Dallas Bluebonnets.
The Dolls later defeated the Bluebonnets 18-14 in a playoff game.
The Dolls lost to the Troopers in the Championship Game, but the game was later declared a draw following a disputed conversion.

1978

1978 won-loss record: 9-0
C. B. Speegle became the Dolls' new head coach this year.
The Dolls opened the 1978 campaign on July 29 with a 54-0 rout over the Tulsa Babes.
The Dolls' "Wild Bunch" defense, which used a 4-3 alignment, allowed only one regular season touchdown this year (scored by the Houston Herricanes in one game with three seconds left to play).
Said Coach Speegle of the Dolls' defense: "They're quick rather than big." (Toledo Blade, Nov. 10, 1978: 26.)
Quarterback Jan Hines threw ten touchdown passes in 1978. Also, she completed 65% of her passes for 800+ yards.
Running back Frankie Neal averaged 100 yards rushing per game this year and scored 8 touchdowns.
Debbie Gossman, who doubled as a defensive tackle and tight end, caught 27 passes in 1978.
The Dolls defeated the Toledo Troopers in the championship game.

1979

1979 won-loss record: 5-1
The Dolls' only defeat came against the Houston Herricanes, 7-6, on Sept. 8. This would be the Dolls' last ever regular season game.
The Dolls were awarded the NWFL Championship after the scheduled championship game versus Columbus was canceled.
The Dolls did not field a team in 1980 or 1981.

1982

Under the leadership of former Dolls' player turned team vice president Rose Shinert, the Oklahoma City Dolls attempted to field a team for 1982 after being dormant since 1979. Tryouts for the 1982 Dolls were held June 28 at Capitol Hill High School.
Just two days before the scheduled August 28 home opener, the Dolls' primary investor bailed out. Someone from southwestern Oklahoma was supposed to put up $100,000 for travel and equipment expenses.
