Dreams of Unicorns

Sicily, a young fairy, gave a quiet sigh as she stared out of her small bedroom window. Oh what dreams she had, had the night before. She had ridden a gorgeous Unicorn mare who had twinkles in her eyes and through her mane. It had always been her wish to reunite the Unicorns and Fairies once again. But it had been many centuries since the two had lived in peace with one another. Long ago two fairies, her ancestors, had betrayed the Unicorns that they loved. They had given them away to greedy humans that tried to kill the lovely Unicorns for their magical horn. By only chance the Unicorn's escaped and vowed never to return to the 'Meadow of Fairies' again. Now she only had the dreams and wishes of them returning.
"Come, Sicily dear. Our chores are to begin late this morning." Her mothers angelic voice carried through the massive tree trunk at which the entire fairy population lived.
"Yes, mother!" She called down the wood stairs as she slipped into a small lavender dress. The spiders that occupied the trunk made clothing for the fairies in exchange for food. The dress fit just right, cut so that it didn't hinder her colorful wings. She leaped off of the top step and glided down into the small room below.
"Why must our chores be late this morning, mother?" She asked referring to what her mother had said only a few moments before. Her mother turned her lovely eyes to her daughters innocent face.
"We must go and collect berries from deep within the forest" Her mother said handing her a hand woven basket made of reeds. Sicily's eyes widened, "But isn't the forest forbidden?" She asked with awe. Her mother smiled, "We have been ordered by the king. He needs a special berry to make his brandy for tonight's banquet, this berry is only found in the forest.
"Then, shall we be on our way?" Sicily asked skipping gleefully to the door. Her mother smiled making her aged cheeks glow with light.

After a morning of strong flying Sicily and her mother came upon the forest. The light of day was cast into darkness as the trunks of the trees grew thick. Sicily shivered as a cold breeze blew through her dress. Her mother looked at her with a reassuring smiled.
"The berries range from red, blue and green. Lets fly further down so we have better viewing." Her mother said taking Sicily's hand. Sicily nodded and soon they descended down to the forest floor. The berry's were few and far apart. But they were easy to spot and soon they were filling their baskets. The berry's were large, quickly filling their baskets to their rims.
"Well, I guess we should head back then" Sicily said as she turned from her mother and took flight. Then she heard it, the sickening crack of breaking wood. She gasped out loud at the noise. Searching above, she saw a squirrel scramble away from the branch that had plummeted out from under it. The branch now was racing at high speed straight toward her mother.
"Mother run!" She screamed, but it was too late. The branch had already collided with her mothers terrified face. The woman collapsed. Sicily dropped her basket and flew at high speed only to find her mother laying unconscious. A large cut above the Fairies brow showed where the branch had hit her. Sicily's muscles strained as she tried to push the branch off of her mothers body. But it was no use, the branch was just to heavy for such a small creature. She collapsed in tears as she gave up hope. She pulled her mothers head unto her lap, caressing the woman's pale temples.

The sound of Sicily's sobs carried through the forest reaching the perked ears of a young passerby. The creature crept on tip toes, as it neared the source of the crying. Parting a large bush and the creature was instantly hit by light. Fairy light! The creature looked down on the little fairies head with pity filling her large eyes.
"What in this forest is the matter child?" the creature asked politely. The fairy sniffed and coughed then turned to see who had come to help her. A gasp escaped the fairy's throat as she looked up into the big, brown eyes of a Unicorn! The Unicorn chuckled from deep within her throat.
"I guess you haven't seen one of my kind before?" The Unicorn asked. The fairy shook her head, "No I haven't, I've always dreamed of meeting one, but we're forbidden to go out of the valley." The fairy said lowering her eyes. The Unicorn's eyes grew troubled, "Then what brings you into this forest?" The fairy's eyes again filled with tears, "Me and my mother came on an errand for the king. But my mother got hit by a branch, she's very cold, I don't know what to do," the fairy's voice rose with panic.
"Calm down little one, I can heal your mother with my horn." The Unicorn said tenderly. The fairy's blue eyes filled with hope.
"Could you!?" She asked leaping to her tiny feat. The Unicorn again chuckled as she reached down and removed the branch from atop the mothers lap. She then bent her head and softly touched the mother with the tip of her horn. Instantly, her mother awakened with a gasp of happiness. Sicily swept her mother into her arms in a joyful embrace.
"Your all right!" She cheered. After calming her daughter the woman turned to the Unicorn, "Will you not come home with me and my daughter and tell the king of what you have done?" The Unicorn nodded, "I would be honored."the night.
