MEDICINAL HERBS
Aloe vera:
Cultivation: Full sun or light shade in frost free locations.
Soil:Gritty,well drained.
Medicinal:Leaf, crush sap from fresh leaves or slice them and
apply as a poultice for chapped skin, dermatitis,eczema and burns.
For small burns, break open leaf and apply its sap to the burn.
For large burns, split and open out a leaf; place sap against skin
and lightly bandage in place. Renew as necessary.
Angelica:
Cultivation:Light shade.Mulch when in full sun.
Soil: Deep and moist.
Medicinal:Make a tea from the leaves as a tonic
for colds and to reduces flatulence.
Anise:
Cultivation:Sunny and sheltered areas.
Soil:Well drained and alkaline.
Medicinal: Use seeds and infuse as a tea for colds,
coughs and other bronchial problems; to soothe colic
in babies, relieve nausia and to stimulate milk
production in nursing mothers.
Arborvitae(yellow cedar):
Medicinal:Twigs,Leaves-Used to treat bloody cough and
heart weakness. Simmer 2 tsps. per cup
for 20 min. and take it cold in 1 Tablespoon
doses, 3-6 times/day. The Powdered plant is an
antifungal for use internally and externally,
good for athletes foot.
Balm of Giliad:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Well-drained,medium loam.
Medicinal:Leaf- Buds are concidered
to be a stimulent and tonic,
antiseptic and expectorant.
When used internally, they are
said to treat bronchitis, coughs
and laryngitis, and when uses
externally in creams, may relieve
arthritic pain, cuts and bruises.
The buds contain the aspirin
substance,salicin, which is
useful for aches and pains.
Basil:
Cultivation:Warm sun,Protect from
wind,frost and scorching,midday
sun.
Soil:Well drained and moist.
Medicinal:Leaf-Steep a few leaves
in wine for several hours as a
tonic. Infuse as a tea to aid
digestion. Put a drop of
essential oil on a cotton ball
and inhale to allay mental
fatigue.
Bay:

Borage:

Broom:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Well drained,slightly acid.
Medicinal:Diuretic,slightly
narcotic, dangerous in large
doses.
Caraway:
Cultivation:Full sun
Soil:Rich loam.
Medicinal:Seed-Chew raw or infused
seed to aid digestion,promote
appetite,sweeten the breath and
relieve flatulence. Safe for
children.
Catnip:
Cultivation:Sun or light shade.
Soil:Well drained.
Medicinal:Leaf or flowering tops-
Contains vitamin C. Infuse to
relieve colds and fevers(as catnip
induces sleep and perspiration but
does not increase body temperature);
for restlessness and colic in children,
for headaches and upset stomachs,
as a mild sedative. Apply infusion
externally to soothe scalp irritations.
Mash leaves and flowering tops for
a poultice for external bruises.
Chamomile:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Light and well drained.
Medicinal:Flowers-Infuse
flowers as a tea for a general
tonic and sedative(good for
restless children). Apply
a compress to treat wounds and
eczema. Use in a bath to
relieve sun burned skin.
Chicory:
Cultivation:Sunny and open.
Soil:Light,preferably alkaline
soil.Dig deeply for good roots.
Medicine:Leaf-May be used for
jaundice and spleen problems.
A poultice soothes inflammation.
Root-Infuse dried root to make
a tonic, mild laxative and diuretic.
A decoction may alleviate gallstones,
kidney stones and inflammation of
the liver or urinary tract.
Comfrey:
Cultivation:Full sun. Position
carefully as confrey is difficult
to eradicate.
Soil:Rich in nitrogen,neutral PH.
Medicinal:Leaf- Make an "oil" to
use externally on skin irritations.
Pick clean dry leaves and cut into
1 inch squares. Pack into a clean
dark jar. Apply a screw-top lid,
label and date.Store for 2 years,
do not open.
This results in a viscous amber
liquid with some sediment.
Decant "oil" into a smaller
container. Use on eczema and
other skin inflammations. Put
fresh leaves in a poultice for
rough skin,aching joints,sores,
burns,cuts,sprains and to
reduce swelling around fractures.
Coriander:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Rich and light.
Medicinal:Seed- Chew or infuse as a
tea for an aperitif,digestive tonic
and mild sedative. Add essential
oil to ointments for painful
rheumatic joints and muscles.
Cayenne:
Cultivation:Sunny location.
Soil:Good rich soil.
Medicinal: Seed powder- is a
powerful stimulent to the
circulatory system and helps
blood flow to the extremities.
In an ointment it can be used
for a topical painkiller for
arthritis and muscle aches.
Helps ward off colds and
other infections,take as
a capsule or tea.
Dill:
Cultivation:Full sun.Protect from wind.
Soil:Rich and well drained.
Medicinal:Seed-Make dill water
for indigestion,flatulence, hiccups,
stomach cramps,insomnia and cholic.
Infuse 1 ounce bruised seeds in 1
cup boiling water then strain.
Take 1 Tablespoon per adult or
1 tsp.for babies. Repeat as
necessary.
Echinacea:
Medicinal:Root,Leaves-`Works for even
the most severe inflammatory conditions
including boils,skin eruptions,running
sores,venomous bites,gangrene,septicemia,
poison oak and ivy, and any other acute
bacterial and viral infection. Whenever
there is pus or red inflammation in a
particular area, echinacea is sure to
be effective, usually within 3 days.
Take 1 cup containing either 10-30 drops
tincture,or 1 1/2 tsp. powder. Take this
tea every 2 hours until infection is
gone.Good for any inflammatory problem.
Elder:
Cultivation:Semi-shade.
Soil:Tolerates most soils.
Medicinal:Flowers- An infusion
can be used to treat colds.
Elderflower water is good for
the complexion and the eyes.
Make an ointment with the
flowers to treat burns and
skin disorders.
Elecampane:
Cultivation:Prefers sun.
Soil:Moist and fertile.
Medicinal:Root- Decoct as
a general tonic, as an
expectorant to ease bronchitis
and coughs, and as a digestive.
Crystallize and eat to relieve
indigestion,asthma and coughs.
Fennel:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Well drained loam, avoid clay.
Medicinal:Seed-Infuse as a tea to
aid digestion and constipation.
Chew to allay hunger and ease
indigestion. Reduces the toxic
effects of Alcohol on the body.
Fenugreek:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Fertile,well drained,alkaline
Medicinal: Seeds- Infuse ground
seeds into a tea to stimulate
digestion and milk flow,ease
coughing,flatulence and diarrhea.
Make a mushy poultice of crushed
seeds and hot milk for inflammation,
ulcers,swollen glands,sciatica and
bruises. Said to be effective in
reducing fevers.
Feverfew:
Cultivation:Prefers sunny position.
Soil:Dry and well drained.
Medicinal:Leaf-Eat five fresh leaves
between slices of bread to help
relieve migraines. Infuse in a
tea for use as a laxative.
Leaf and flower-mild sedative,and
helps relieve muscle spasms.
Garlic:
Cultivation:Sunny,tolerates partial shade.
Soil:Rich,moist and well drained;
tolerates poorer soils.
Medicinal:Use as an antibiotic,to cleanse
blood,reduce blood pressure,and clear
catarrh;take as protection against the
common cold,worms,dysentery and typhoid.
Ginger:
Medicinal:Root- Warming to the
body,antiseptic.Chop 2 inches of the
fresh root(or half tsp. powder),simmer
for 10-20 min.Add honey and lemon.
Will treat fevers,chest problems ,flu,
indigestion,colic,diarrhea,morning
sickness,works well with children.
Hawthorn:
Cultivation:Open sunny position,will
tolerate semi-shade.
Medicinal:Berries- good for high
blood pressure and is a cardiac
tonic,good for just about any cardiac
problem.Helps lower cholesterol,strengthens
digestion,water retention, bad nerves and
insomnia.Simmer 2 tsp. berries /flowers per cup
water for 20 min. The dose is a quarter
cup,4 times a day.
Honeysuckle(Lonicera Caprifolium):
Medicinal:Properties are shown for
the common flower that grows wild,
not for ornamental varieties. The
flowers are antimicrobial and work
against salmonella,stapyloccus,and
streptococcus. It works as an
antibiotic against colds,flus,
fevers,Sore throats,conjunctivitis
and inflammations of the bowel,
urinary tract and reproductive organs.
Treat with a tea made from 2 tsp in
water,4 times/day.
Hops:
Cultivation:Sunny open position.
Soil:Fertile and deeply dug.
Medicinal:Flower-Infuse for a
mild sedative,and for digestive
problems,also for use as an
antiseptic.Inhaling the flowers
in a dream pillow will help
you fall asleep.
Horehound:
Cultivation:Full sun.Protect from winds.
Soil:Dryish and alkaline.
Medicinal:Leaf- At the first sign
of a cold:finely chop nine small
horehound leaves, mix with 1 Tablespoon
honey, and eat slowly to ease sore
throat and cough. Suck on horehound
cough candy as an expectorant(can be
purchased at health food store).
Drink a cold infusion to help ease
indigestion and heartburn, and to
destroy intestinal parasites.
Horseradish:
Cultivation:Open sunny positions.
Soil:Light,well dug,rich and moist.
Medicinal:Root-Include grated root
in diet to stimulate digestion,
eliminate mucus and waste fluids.
Take as a syrup for bronchitis and
coughs.Grate into a poultice and
apply to stiff muscles,sciatica
and rheumatism.
Hyssop:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Light,well drained,alkaline.
Medicinal:Flowering top-Infuse as
a tea for throat and lung complaints,
bronchial catarrh,and poor digestion
and appetite.Leaf-Put leaves in a
poultice to heal wounds and bruises.

Juniper:

Soil:Will tolerate alkaline soil.
Medicinal:Berries-Infuse in a tea
for its diuretic properties,also
good for cystitis.

Lady's Mantle:
Cultivation:Full sun or partial shade.

Medicinal:Whole plant(green parts)-
Infused as a tea to drink during
pregnancy and for 10 days after
giving birth to help womb contract,
and to regulate monthly cycle. Helps
relieve Menopausal symptoms.
Use leaves as a compress for healing
wounds and reducing inflammation.
Lavender:

Lemon verbena:
Cultivation:Full sun.Needs shelter
in almost frost free position.
Soil:Light,well drained and alkaline.
Poor soil produces stronger plants
able to survive cold winters.
Medicinal:Infuse as a mildly sedative
tea to soothe bronchial and nasal
congestion, to reduce indigestion,
flatulence,stomach cramps,nausia
and palpitations.Use for no more
than 2 weeks at time.
Licorice:
Medicinal:Root-Good for the lungs
and spleen.Helps digestion and soothes
ulcers,also for colds,coughs,asthma,
sore throats and abdominal pain. Helps
neutralize other plant poisons and
helps arrest an allergic reaction.
1tsp. in a cup of water,simmer for 20

Linden:

Medicinal:Flowers-Infuse as a tea to
ease digestive problems and as a calming
tonic.
Lovage:
Cultivation:Full sun,partial shade.

any of these to reduce water retention,
assist in removal of waste products,
and aid rheumatism.

soils,except waterlogged.
Medicinal:Flower- Soothing,healing
and antiseptic. Use in ointments for
leg ulcers,varicose veins,bedsores
and bruises. Take in an infusion to
aid digestion and promote bile
production in the liver. The oil
is good for just about any skin
complaint and is an excellent
skin conditioner/moisturizer.
Marjoram:
Cultivation:Full sun,Midday shade.
Soil:Well drained,dryish,alkaline,
nutrient rich.
Medicinal:Infuse in a tea for colds,
headaches,simple gastrointestinal and
nervous disorders.In an ointment or
compress for relief from rheumatic
pains and tension.
Marshmallow:
Cultivation:Full sun.
Soil:Moist,moderate fertility.
Medicinal:Root-Infuse as a tea
for coughs,diarrhea and insomnia.
Add to ointment for burns. Put
in a poultice for inflammations.
Meadowsweet:

Milk Thistle:
Medicinal:Seed,leaf,stem,root-Powerful liver
cleanser and regenerator,has saved many
people from mushroom poisoning. If you are
exposed to toxic chemicals regularly, or
have liver problems, taking an infusion
of 10-20 drops tincture in warm water,4
times/day.
Mustard:
Cultivation:Sunny,benefits from light
shade in summer to prevent bolting.
Soil:Fertile and well drained.
Medicinal:Seed- Take 1 Tablespoon
crushed in warm water to induce vomiting.
Use powdered to make a poultice to
draw blood to skin or lungs, and to
relieve pain and inflammation in
rheumatism,arthritis and congested lungs.
Mullein:
Cultivation:Sunny and sheltered.
Soil:Well drained,chalky or poor.
Medicinal:Flower-Steep in hot water
until water is yellow,then drink to
relieve persistent coughs,respiratory
mucus and hoarseness.
Myrrh:
Medicinal:Resin- A valued disinfectant and
is used for washing wounds,makesure wound
is well cleaned first,as it tends to seal
wounds once placed on them.Use the tincture
mixed with water for wound washing.Myrrh is
also good for circulation,menopausal and
menstrual problems,diabetes and obesity.Makes
a good mouthwash for gingivitis as well.
Add 10-20 drops tincture to a cup of water,
4time/day during treatment.

Skullcap:
Medicinal:Whole herb-calms the nervous
system. Convulsions,hysteria,headache and
insomnia are treated with this plant.
Sorrel:
