Tip for June
"Running Solitude"
Whether alone or in a pack, the inspirations, and perils, of solitude
found in running cannot be mistaken. There are few activities that
provide
one with such a channel to our inner being, what better form of
meditation
than a long slow run down a familiar path. And, I would argue that you
don't have to be alone on this journey. There comes a time in every
run
where talking is either no longer possible, or an unspoken accord has
been
reached that it is time for solitude.
For me it is a time to reflect on the day, before and to come; plan;
and
ponder dreams and ambitions. It is also the ideal opportunity to
examine
your training. Take a detailed account of your current condition, and
look
to where you are along your current schedule. Plan that next grueling
speed day, picture the ease of a recovery day, or strategize for an
upcoming race. Running is my time alone, again regardless of who I am
or
am not running from. The physical exertion humbles my mind and frees
my
spirit from responsibilities and burdens of the "real" world.
You may have a different idea of how you like to spend you quiet time,
your meditation, or solitude; but, next time you're out on your daily
route, clear your head, and see if you can't remove yourself from
reality.
Allow your thoughts to develop. Take time for prayer. Work through
the
joys and toils of your life.
I believe you will discover anew that running is truly conditioning of
not
merely the physical.
