Let me welcome you to the Law Enforcement Index Page. My name is Wayne Trautz aka dixiecop. I have been employed with the City of Mount Vernon Police Department for 24 years, 22 as Chief of Police. I graduated from the Police Academy in Macon, Georgia, in 1976. I have been an active member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police since 1985 and have held various positions in the association. I am presently serving as Sergeant of Arms.We have three full time and three part time officers on the force. The departmental offices are located in the Mount Vernon City Hall, 435 South Railroad Avenue, Mt. Vernon, GA 30445. We protect and serve a population of approximately 2,000. We also provide assistance to the security force of Brewton Parker College. At any given time BPC adds another 1,500 to the population.
Mount Vernon is one of those small southern towns where everybody knows everybody. I can always find a smile and a wave where ever I go. More people stop in the station just to talk and pass the time then they do to complain or ask for assistance. Come in most any day of the week and you will find at least three citizens sitting around a large table talking politics. In these parts we still say 'Maam' and 'Sir', not because we have to, but because we want to. We still tip our hats to the ladies and we always go to church on Sunday, BEFORE we go to the river to fish and swim or boat down stream. If you want lights, action, and the roar of the crowd then go to Atlanta; if not, Mount Vernon is the place for you.
Other then the usual jobs one does as a teenager, I have always been a cop. I love my job and do not want to do anything else. So I reckon as long as things keep going like they are, I will get up every morning and drive the two miles to work!
