des
Comptoirs Foucauld
The House of Lucien-Foucauld
was founded by M. Lucien-Foucauld in Cognac trade in 1847. M. Foucauld
was an ardent admirer of fine Cognac and he entered into this business
because of his love of the product.
His quest was to
bring to the world the finest Cognac possible while extolling the virtues
of land, the people and the reasons why Cognac shoulf not be regarded as a simple brandy. In this regard, LUCIEN-FOUCAULD became a member of the Tribunal
de Commerce of Cognac and stayed in that post for 15 years.
During the period
of 1884 - 1908, he was the President of that organization. He also served
on the Conseil Municipal of Cognac for more than 20 years.
By 1887, his reputation
had grown to the point where he was appointed as a member to the jury at
the Exposition International Le Havre. This soon was followed by an appointment
as a member to the Comities d'Organization des Exportations Universelles
de Paris 1889 and 1900.
The distinguished
House of LUCIEN-FOUCAULD is the one of only 3 producers to obtain such
an honor. In fact, his Cognac won consecutive medals:
GOLD MEDAL PARIS 1889
GOLD MEDAL PARIS 1900
In 1894, Lucien's
son Marc joined the firm and became an active member in 1889. During his
apprenticeship under Lucien, Marc absorbed his father's love of Cognac
. Upon his father's death, Marc took over as the CEO of LUCIEN-FOUCAULD
et Co. It should be noted that Marc Foucauld conserved all the values and
principals his father had established when founding the company.
Marc's star now
began to grow and the French government appointed him as a member of the
Jury Aux Expositions Universelles de St. Louis (US) in 1904, Liege in 1905
and Bordeaux in 1907.
On July 21, 1906
by decree of the President of the Republic of France, Marc Foucauld was
named the Commercial Counsulate for a period of 5 years. After the initial
5 year period of service, he gained such recognition that in 1912 he was
asked and acquiesced to accepting another 5 year term as Commercial Consulate.
If one enters the
city of Cognac, they will see the old Foucauld offices and cellars because
they are located right in the middle of the city. The building is indeed
impressive covering approximately 5,540 meters.
In 1977 M. Michel
Coste purchased des Comptoirs Foucauld and their entire stocks of old and
rare Cognacs. Michel Coste was already one of the premier producers of
Armagnac and the purchase of Foucauld completed his desire to have a premium
Cognac house equal in stature to his company in Armagnac.
In 1998, Michel
retired and his son Philippe became the managing directeur. Philippe has
taken the reigns from his father and has used his father's guidance in
continuing the same traditions of both companies.
Recently, Philippe
has created a similar line of vintage and aged Cognacs under his own name.
They can be found on the Philippe Selection page on this web site.
