Although most well known as the Goddess of the hunt, she is also the Goddess of human rights, childbirth and the protector of children. As a warrior, Artemis is the equal of Ares, the Greek god of war, and her beauty is enough to make even Aphrodite, the Goddess of love, jealous. She is a chaste Goddess and avenges the victims of infidelity. Her steadfastness in this belief in chastity became the cause of undue pain and suffering in the case of Actaeon, which serves as a reminder that any cause may be taken to extremes, and may become as unjust as the evil it is meant to fight against. Actaeon was a huntsman who accidentally came across the Goddess bathing in a pond. When he saw her beauty he could not help himself and hid behind some bushes, watching her in awe. Artemis caught site of him and, at first, was prepared to let him go. Her principles however, would not allow her to do so. She decided that he would go back to his home and brag about seeing the chaste Goddess naked. Rather than kill him, she turned him into a great stag,. Unfortunately, he was immediately ripped apart by his own hunting dogs.
