While Kulikowski and Powell had legitimate shots at making the team, other gymnasts used the event primarily as a learning experience. Katie Teft, at 14 the youngest trials participant, enjoyed competing and looks foward to Sydney in four years. "It was a really great experience because not everybody gets to go to the Olympic Trials," she said. "Yeah, I was disappointed, but I didn't dwell on the situation." Instead, Teft was proud to have logged the fifth-best optional total on her way to eighth place. "I think she really set the stage for the next quadrenium," said Twistars coach John Geddert. "I think a lot of people had the team pretty well picked when they went in, and there were a few of these underdogs that came in and scared the pants off them."
