(Launch) - Universal Music Group officials have reportedly confirmed that Ringo Starr has been dropped from his deal with Mercury Records after disappointing sales of his last studio albums, "Vertical Man" and the "I Wanna Be Santa Claus" Christmas collection. In a recent Internet chat, Starr made several comments about Mercury maintaining that the label released him "due to their incompetence." Meanwhile, Starr is planning to work on a new album with longtime collaborator Mark Hudson which he hopes will be "on any label other than Mercury." Prior to that, fans will be able to pick up a box set of performances by the former Beatles' All-Starr Bands, which is due for release Oct. 10.

NEW YORK, May 1 (Reuters) - Once again getting a little help, but this time from a different set of friends, former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is hitting the road for a U.S. tour more than 36 years after the Fab Four first conquered America.
In a nod to the Ghost of Beatlemania Past, Starr announced the tour at the Plaza Hotel, where thousands of screaming girls converged in hopes of catching a glimpse of their idols during the group's maiden U.S. visit in February 1964.
``We're blessed we're still alive ... and that people want to come and see us,'' said Starr, 59. ``I'm still living a dream come true that I've had since I was 13 years old.''
The sixth All-Starr Band tour kicks off May 12 and will wind through the U.S. until midsummer.
``The rehearsal part is always the worst,'' Starr said. ``The show is the easiest bit. It's exciting and frustrating and amazing,'' he said.
Joining the skin-pounder born Richard Starkey is former Cream bass player Jack Bruce, guitarist Dave Edmunds, Eric Carmen on keyboards, Simon Kirke of the groups Bad Company and Free on drums, and Mark Rivera, a veteran of several Billy Joel tours, on sax.
``The format is pretty much the same as the last tours. (Do) all the hits, and have a lot of fun,'' Starr said.
Real estate corporation Century21 is sponsoring the All-Starr band via its Century21.com Web site's ``Connections'' programme. And for all the technology that has been integrated into the music business and although all the band members have their own Web sites, Ringo says he remains a brick-and-mortar rock-and-roller.
NO CYBERSCRIBE
``I've sent three e-mails in my life, and my wife, Barbara, has typed two of them,'' he said.
But when asked about computer piracy and the distribution of music over the Internet, Starr appeared well aware of the changes in the business.
``The downloading isn't good enough for me yet ... but if the musicians end up not being ripped off, it's a good thing,'' he said.
During any event involving a former Beatle, talk eventually turns to the group and its surviving members.
When asked about guitarist George Harrison, who survived a stabbing by an intruder at his home last year, Starr said: ``I haven't talked to him lately, but I saw him a while ago. He's doing a lot better. ... There's a lot of healing going on.''
The only mention of Sir Paul McCartney came when Starr was asked if he thought McCartney would marry his current girlfriend, former model Heather Mills.
``I think you should ask him that,'' Starr said wryly. P
Founding Beatle John Lennon was shot to death by a deranged fan outside his Manhattan apartment building in 1980.
A definitive written account of the Beatles legend by the three surviving members remains on track for release later this year. Calling it a ``very big book,'' not only in size but in subject matter, Starr said he was happy with the parts he had seen or contributed.
``It's going to be a very worthwhile piece, because it's mainly from our lips and not from other peoples','' he said.

Surviving members Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr have spent six years working on the book.
The 360-page Beatles Anthology, priced at $80, is expected to sell 20 million copies worldwide and promises to lift the lid on the band's rise to fame, their sexual exploits, drug taking and eventual break-up in 1970.
Murdered bandmember John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono will receive a quarter of the proceeds of from the book when it comes out this autumn and the profits are likely to top $1.6 billion.
Containing 1,200 photographs, the book reveals how Lennon was the first to walk out of the band and how the other three turned down a $180 million (o113 million) offer to perform 17 concerts in the America, Germany and Japan.
The band's company Apple Corps says, "Most biographies have been based on ill-informed perceptions while the men involved have hitherto said almost nothing." -- WENN
