PART 2
“Hey, what’re you doin’ out so late, young lady?” came a voice from the darkness inside.
“Who are you?” Fay demanded, looking in the car, but only to find darkness.
“Me? Why, people know me as ‘The Dream Guy’. What’s your name? Pookey?” he said, laughing.
“No it’s not ‘Pookey’. People know me as ‘Your Worst Nightmare’. Now get away from me.” Fay yelled.
“I’ll do whatever I want when I want to whoever I want, babe. Now don’t you be tellin’ me what to do, babe. See ya around.” he yelled as he drove off.
“Don’t call me babe!” Fay yelled after him. When he was out of sight, Fay said to herself, “Jerk. Who does he think he is? The Emperor of China? I have new for that guy: There is no Emperor of China. I don’t think so, babe!”
She decided not to go to Steve’s and just go straight home. When she got home, the door was locked so she had to get the spare key under the mat. When she reached for the key, she felt nothing. It was gone.
The next morning, she woke up to the sound of her mother opening and closing her drawers. She lifted her head, still half asleep.
“Mom? What are you doing?” Fay asked groggily. Her stopped and looked at her.
“Oh honey, go back to sleep.” she said.
“But mom, I have to go to school.” Fay protested.
“Honey, your not going to school today.” her mom said. Fay sat up.
“Mom, what’s wrong? Why am I not going to school today?” Fay asked.
“Well. . .some stuff was taken from the house.” her mother said. Fay laid back down.
“Oh mother! That probably has something to do with the fact that someone took the spare key.”
“But honey, I would understand that, but they took some pictures and they were all of you. They also took some of your bras.” her mom said. Fay almost laughed out loud. What kind of idiot would take my bras?, Fay wondered. Probably some pervert guy from school that’s gonna tell all the other guys that he scored with me. What idiots.
“Weird.” was all Fay managed to say without laughing.
“They also took your locket.” her mother said. Fay turned serious.
“My locket! Oh no! I loved that locket! It’s the only thing I had to remind me of my X-best friend.” Fay exclaimed.
“I know honey. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not fair! Sandella was my best friend and she died. She died mom! Why would someone be so cruel?” Fay demanded.
“I don’t know. Honey, this world is cruel. What can I say?”
“I don’t know. All I know is that whoever stole that locket is going to pay. Big time. If I ever find them, I’ll kill them.” Fay said.
“Well, you’ll probably get it back. In the meantime, your dad is coming home tonight!”
“Papa is coming home? Yesss! Well, that is some good news!”
“Yep. He said he was going to bring you home a gift.”
“A gift? Cool! I’ve always wanted some kind of souvenir from Europe. Do you know what it is yet?”
“No. He said he wanted it to be a surprise to all of us.”
“Daddy’s full of surprises. He’s always bringing me home nice gifts and I never know what they are.” Fay said.
“Well, that’s just the way your father is. He gave me a surprise when he proposed to me. He got me the biggest rock I’d ever seen!” her mother said.
“I know, I’ve seen it. It’s quite a rock!” Fay said.
“Well, anyway, I don’t want you to go to school today. You can go tomorrow, but I just think that going to school today would be bad because I think someone might be after you.”
“Okay, fine with me.” Fay wanted to see Steve today, but she knew not to protest against her mother. Besides, missing English wouldn’t be that bad. She could just invite Steve over later. After all, it wasn’t like as if she was really sick.
That afternoon, she called Steve but he wasn’t home. She was disappointed, but she thought it was okay and that she’d see him tomorrow at school.
That night, her dad hadn’t come home like he said he would. She was disappointed, but not surprised. Her dad was usually a day or two late. She just hoped that he wasn’t that late.
The next day, Fay went to school and Steve wasn’t there.
“Hey Anthony, do you know where Steve is?” Fay asked him at lunch.
“No. He wasn’t here yesterday either. I think he’s sick or something because he didn’t look too good the last time I saw him. Maybe you should call him.” Anthony suggested.
“I tried and he either wasn’t home or wasn’t answering.” Fay said.
“Oh. Weird, but hey, what do I know about the guy.” Anthony said.
“Hey, I thought you two were friends.” Fay said suspiciously.
“Yeah, we are. But, it’s like I told you, I haven’t known the guy for that long.”
“Yeah, well, I’m gonna try his number again tonight. If he doesn’t answer I’ll just have to go over to his house. He gave me his address and I gave him my phone number, so you don’t have to do anything else for us.” Fay said, going to her fifth period class.
When Fay got home after school, she went upstairs to call Steve. She stopped short when she heard crying coming from her parents bedroom. She knocked on the door because it was closed. The crying stopped and the door opened.
“Hey mom. What’s the matter?” Fay asked concerned.
“Well. . .here,” her mother said, handing her a note. “Read this.” Fay read it. She was reading it and it fell from her hands as she gasped. This is what it said:
Dear Mandella Family,
I am afraid I have some bad news. Mr. Mandella is dead. He died only but a few days ago. He was a great man. He was carrying an object with him that I’m sure he wanted you to have.
Sincerely,
Sammuel Gandel
“Mom, do you know how he died?” Fay asked, tears coming to her eyes.
“No honey. I called the number that your father left us and they said that they knew he died because of a bullet wound and they don’t know how it happened exactly.” her mother said, choking on the word “died”.
“Well, where is the object?” Fay asked.
“Right here.” her mother said, handing it to her. She retreated back to her room and closed the door so she could mourn in private. Fay stood there, looking down at the object she held in her hand. It was a bracelet with the strangest stones she’d ever seen. She stared at it for the longest time. Suddenly, it started glowing and burning in her hand. Startled, she let go of it and it dropped on the floor. She looked at it again and this time it wasn’t glowing. It must be my imagination, because I’ve never seen a bracelet like it before, Fay thought. Somehow, she felt drawn to it, but also afraid of it. She picked it up and walked into her room. She opened her dresser drawer and put it underneath all her clothes. Then, she went over to her phone to call Steve. He still didn’t answer, so she decided to talk over to Steve’s house.
When she got there, she knocked on the door. After a few minutes, the door opened. There, before Fay, was a very tall and very handsome, yet older man.
“Hi. Is Steve there?” asked Fay.
“Hold on a second.” The man said as he disappeared into the house. A second later, Steve appeared.
“Hi Steve. Can I come in?” Fay asked.
“Sure.” Steve said. Fay walked into the house.
“Steve, you weren’t at school yesterday or today and I called you, but no one answered. I think that it’s time for you to explain.”
“Your right, but I don’t know how to explain. I don’t understand it myself.” Steve said.
“Just tell me what you know and I’ll believe you.” Fay said.
“Do you promise?”
“I promise, geez!”
“Okay. I got up the other morning and much clock wasn’t working, the phone was out of order, and the door was really hot so I couldn’t get out.” Steve said.
“I’ve never heard of anything like that before, but if you say it’s true, then I believe you.” Fay said, trying to be confident.
“Do you really?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Now, do you want to watch a movie?”
“Sure. How about ‘Jerry Maguire’?”
“It’s an old movie, but okay.” They watched “Jerry Maguire” and after that, Fay went home.
She went up to her room and closed the door. She got her bracelet out of her dresser drawer. She looked at it for a minute. Then, she put it on. It looked positively lovely on her hand. She decided to keep the bracelet on her hand for a while.
The next day, she wore the bracelet to school. This time, Steve was there. Fay thought that it was pretty weird because Steve seemed delighted to see the bracelet on her hand.
That night, Steve came over. He stared at the bracelet whenever he thought Fay wasn’t looking. Finally, Fay couldn’t take it anymore.
“What is it? Do you want this bracelet or something? What?!” Fay yelled. Steve looked up at her.
“Huh?” he asked.
“Your not even listening! Here!” Fay yelled and she took the bracelet and threw it at him. “Since your so obsessed with the bracelet, you have it! You’ve been staring at it all night! So go sleep with it, for all I care!”
“How can you sleep with a bracelet?”
“How the hell would I know? Have it by your pillow or something!”
“Don’t yell, please. I hate yelling.” Steve said quietly.
“I’ll do whatever I want! No one is going to stop me.” Fay exclaimed.
“Fine! You can yell all you want, but I won’t be around to hear it!” Steve yelled and he got up and went out the door, slamming it. All of the sudden, Fay felt bad for yelling at Steve. She wished she hadn’t. She looked on the floor and there the bracelet lay. She picked it up and took it into the kitchen. She was about to throw it into the garbage can, when she noticed an inscription on the inside of it.
I will love you forever, my darling Fay. 1863
She dropped it suddenly. Then, she picked it up and ran to her mother’s room. She pounded on her mother’s closed door.
“Mom! Mom!” Fay exclaimed. The door opened.
“Honey, what’s going on?” her mother asked, immediately concerned.
“Mom! Look at this inscription!” Fay yelled, taking the bracelet and handing it to her mother. After she read it, she handed it back to Fay.
“Is this what you bothered me with?” she asked. Fay’s mouth dropped open.
“Mom! You don’t even care?! This bracelet is really old! It has my name on it. Explain why you aren’t frantic.” Fay said. Her mother sighed.
“Honey, your great-great-aunt’s name was Fay. It could’ve been to her. Nothing to get excited about.” she said.
“What was her last name?” Fay asked.
“Well, her last name was Huwkinoff. She-. Never mind.”
“What? She what?”
“Nothing. It was nothing.”
“Let me be the judge of that.” Fay wouldn’t give up.
“No, look. I was just going to say something of no importance.” Her mother said and she went back into her room and closed the door.
“Weird.” Fay muttered to herself. Then, she went into the living room and turned on the computer.
The next day, Steve avoided Fay all day. She didn’t really blame him. After all, she did treat him pretty badly last night.
At lunch, Fay decided that she was going to apologize to Steve.
When lunch was almost over, Fay saw Steve. She ran over to him. He tried to run away, but he was cornered.
“What do you want? To throw more insults or objects at me?” Steve asked nastily.
“Look, I deserved that. Steve, I’m sorry. It’s just that. . .well, I don’t like the bracelet. It scares me.”
“Oh sure. I bet everything that I like scares you.”
“Look, maybe I deserved that too, but I don’t like the bracelet. I’m sorry, but you were staring at it, so I thought maybe you liked the bracelet more than you like me.” Fay said. Steve stared at her for a minute. Then, he started laughing.
“Is that what you thought? Oh boy! You’d actually believe that I’d like a bracelet more than you?!”
“I know it’s stupid, but that’s what I thought.”
“Do you want me to prove that your wrong?” Steve asked.
“Sure, go ahead.” Fay said. Steve kissed her. A few seconds later, they heard a gruff voice behind them say, “Excuse me. That is a sign of affection that we do not allow at school. Sir, please detach your lips from this lady’s.” They stopped kissing and looked his way. It was their principal, Mr. Webber. They both stiffed laughs.
“Now, if neither of you want suspension or detention, I’d suggest you stop kissing.” he said.
“Okay. We won’t kiss again.” Steve said.
“Good.” he said and he walked away.
“Well, we won’t get caught when we kiss at school.” Steve said.
“How are we gonna do that?” Fay asked.
“Well, we’ll just have to kiss in the boy’s bathroom. The rest of the boys in there’ll understand. After all, they’ve all done it before.” Steve said.
“They have?” Fay asked surprised.
“Yep,” Steve replied.
“Well, I gotta go to fifth period. See you at about six tonight? At Yoshi’s? You like Japanese food, don’t you?”
“Definitely. I’ll be there at six. Are you going to be there?”
“Of course. Don’t be stupid. Why would I tell you to be somewhere when I wouldn’t go?”
“I don’t know. And don’t call me stupid.”
“Okay, I won’t. Gotta go. Bye.” Fay said. She walked to her fifth period class.
