CHapter1
Theresa(Vivian) walked to her usual destination after work. The video shop was crowded like it normally was, she squeezed her way into the shop and went to the 'new' movie section. The owner immediately greeted Theresa "Terrie, help yourself!" she yelled through the crowd. Terrie gave the woman a quick wave indicating that she would be fine.
The owner of the shop met Terrie about 3 months before but she felt like she knew the girl forever. Terrie, recently got a full time job at a law firm as a secretary. She was always interested in watching the shows or chinese soap operas. Terrie preferred the old ones since they were the best made movies. At the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of a concert poster for Leon Lai. Being a devoted fan of his music, she went closer for a better look. He was having a concert in a month. Excited as she was, Terrie patiently awaited all the customers to leave before she asked the owner.
"Lee Thai, how much are the tickets for?" Terrie asked with obvious interest.
"Hmm...its pretty expensive. It runs from $100. to $2000. for the VIP."
"Wow..." Terrie desperately wanted to go but she knew she wouldn't want to go alone. She decided to ask her roomate and best friend Keri. She bid farewell to the nice lady and walked a few yards down to her apartment building.
The girls shared a two bedroom together. Terrie and Keri(Ada) were almost like sisters, they grew up together. Both were the only child in the family. Although they're as different as can be, they've never gotten in a fight before. Terrie barged through the apartment door hoping that Keri would be there, unfortunately she wasn't home yet.
'Probably out with her boyfriend again.' she thought. Terrie never really accepted that boyfriend of Keri, eventhough they've been serious for two years. The longest relationship Keri ever had. This guy was cold and not romatic at all, he didn't know how to treat his girlfriend. Keri had to ask him to get her flowers on Valentines day. Even then, he only gave her one red rose because he was too cheap to get her any more. Yet she still loved this guy. 'I guess love is blind.' she thought bitterly.
From the mention of the word love made her sick. She's almost 25 and never even had a boyfriend. Her mother use to tell her not to be too picky because she will grow up to be an old maid and won't be able to find a guy. But what her mother didn't understand was that Terrie was waiting for Mr. Right. She knew what she liked in a guy and she believed in fate. Once love comes, she will accept it with open arms despite what the guy looks like.
Terrie quickly changed into her clothes as she turned on her computer. She logged onto the internet hoping to get a chance to chat with her online buddy of one week named Paul. He was quite the charmer, always writing the right things. She always dreamed about a relationship over the internet but was still careful enough not to give too much information. Although this guy named Paul(Nick Cheung) was different.
She logged on to ICQ, a chatting program used almost all over the world. Paul worked in Australia as a internet technician, or so he said. She couldn't help but feel a little cautious about letting him get to know her even more. But he seemed almost honest and she had a good feeling about him.
She smiled to herself when he made a little joke. He was going on vacation to Japan pretty soon and he asked if she wanted something from there. Terrie thought for a minute until she replied 'Sure, anything you think that I'll like'
He replied back 'Easy going, I like that in a woman.'
She giggled to herself. "Sheesh, you haven't even met the guy and you're already falling under his spell." Keri commented.
Terrie jumped in her seat "Gosh, you scared me! Don't you ever knock??"
"I did, you were too busy chatting with your boyfriend." she emphasized on the word boyfriend. Keri was very overprotected when it came to her best friend. Terrie wasn't experienced in the dating field like Keri, who had so many boyfriends that she couldn't even count them all.
"He's not my boyfriend." she rolled her eyes. Suddenly her face lit up remembering what she wanted to ask her friend. "Hey, there's a Leon Lai concert coming up. Its my first concert, I really want to go but not alone. You want to go with me?"
Keri smiled "Sure...you paying?"
Terrie's face fell "Fine. Boy you're very expensive." she returned to her ICQ.
"Hey, not everyone gets a date with Keri Cheung for free!" she laughed as she went to her own room and changed.
**********
The guys hung out at the cafe restaurant for the fourth time that week. Life was getting depressing as ever, no girlfriends. Chris(Andy) had a steady girlfriend that he broke up with many years before and same situation with Richard. While Eric(Sunny) never had a girlfriend, nor has he ever liked a girl. Chris and Richard(Dicky) often wondered if their best friend and roommate was gay. But it was more of an inside joke that they had between each other. Eric was too macho to be gay, he had too much self pride in his manhood that it was almost overbearing to the other two guys.
Chris took a gulp of his beer "Man this is depressing."
Richard laughed "Yeah, every day I have to see you two ugly guys. Its very depressing."
Eric and Chris exchanged glances as they got up from their stool and put a threatening hand on both sides of Richard's shoulder. "What did you say?" Chris asked.
Richard gave a nervous laugh as he covered himself "Not...nothing. I was just kidding." he smiled weakly hoping that they would forgive him that time.
The other two looked at each other and smiled as they charged at Richard. Tickling him and grabbing him in unknown places. The guys were best friends since high school and it was a joke they use to play on each other. Two would gang up on one, it was mostly Richard since he has a bad mouth and he was tiny and easy to pick on. People that don't know them assumed they were gay, but other friends that know them were used to their wild antics.
Richard tried hard to cover himself but he was a tiny guy that couldn't fight off two average size guys. He curled himself on the ground beneath the stool as he let out a cry "AHHH!!!" everyone in the cafe turned to the guys.
Eric and Chris instantly stopped as they took two seats away from Richard. They pretended not to know the guy that was balled up in the corner as they ignored him and spoke to each other.
Richard peeked from his hands as he saw all the eyeballs staring at him. He quickly stood up and straightened his shirt and pants as he walked over to the guys and took a seat next to Eric. Once he sat down the two guys got up and began walking out of the cafe. "Hey!!" he called after them as he rushed to keep up with them.
Chris was friends with Eric first when they were in Junior High together. Soon they met Richard in high school due to their mutual friend named Kelly, who was Richard's girlfriend at that time. The two guys didn't have an immediate liking to Richard who they thought were trying to act cool. He was a small guy but showed everyone how tough he really was. After a few months, the guys hit it off so well that they hung out with each other more than ever. It was to the point where Kelly got annoyed because she felt like she was losing her boyfriend to two other guys.
Chris got with his first girfriend, Robyn when he was a sophomore in high school. After high school, Chris and his girlfriend broke up due to unclarifying reasons in which Eric knew about yet Chris remained in the dark.
The guys had a different relationship with each other, none were ever jealous of the other two's relationship with each other. Chris was the mediator amongst the group. Chris and Eric went back a long way, they became best friends first, yet they had a difference of opinions with girls and life overall. In return Chris and Richard were alot more like, they had the same taste in girls but had different opinions about relationships. They were closer in a sense of compatibility and personality. Richard and Eric on the other hand are not a good match together, they would have nothing to say if it wasn't for Chris.
By the time Richard reached the other two, he found them staring at a poster outside a video shop by the cafe. "What are you guys looking at?" he asked. The little joke was easily forgetten as his interest changed.
"Its Leon Lai's concert. You want to go?" Chris asked.
Richard shrugged his shoulders "Sounds cool."
"I don't want to go." Eric spoke up. The guys turned their heads to him questioningly "I just don't like his singing. I don't want to go." he said stubbornly as he walked off.
"Oh come on, it'll be fun. Maybe you'll meet a girl there?" Chris tried to convince his friend. The guys walked back to their three bedroom apartment.
"No, I don't want to go." he said firmly as he opened the door to their apartment.
"Its just for fun, he doesn't sing that bad." Richard chimed in.
"NO!" Eric said before entering his own room and shut the door in their faces.
Richard gave a funny face as he and Chris walked out to the living room. "What's wrong with him?"
"I don't know. Maybe he doesn't have the money to spend?" Chris thought out loud.
"Nah, he knows we can pay for him." Since Chris worked in the bank as a teller while Richard graduated from a technician school earlier that year. He had a well paying job.
Chris shook his head. "Yeah, that's what I assumed. But I really want to go to the concert."
"Me too." Richard agreed. Suddenly a sly smile crossed over his face "We can get him to go..."
Chris turned his head suspiciously "What are you thinking?"
"Just tell him that we're going out or something. Then we'll just go straight to the concert, when we get there, he won't be able to run?"
"Why don't we just knock his head over with a bat and drag him to the concert?" Chris asked sarcastically.
Richard shook his head "Too easy. I like my idea better. You want to get the tickets?"
Chris nodded "Yeah, give me some money."
"You're the one with the two jobs. Plus your dad owns a restaurant!!"
Chris was use to that judgement that his family is rich because his father owns half of a restaurant. Which wasn't true at all, his father worked hard to support the family. Chris worked at the bank during the day and he worked at the restaurant three days a week. Mostly the weekend. "Well, you make a lot more now Mr. Technician." he said in his defense.
"Oh alright!" Richard mumbled under his breathe as he pulled out a few bills from his wallet. "Where are we sitting? The back?" he knew it was cheaper to sit in the last few rows.
"Its my first concert, Im sitting up front!!" Chris said as he yanked the rest of the bills from Richard's wallet. Before his friend can take back his money, Chris had jumped over the couch and ran to his bedroom where he locked it behind him.
He ignored the banging sound of the door coming from Richard who demanded his money back. Chris laughed as he heard Richard whining over and over until he disappeared into his own room, finally giving up. Chris shook his head, his life would be so boring without these two guys.
She came home that night feeling giddy and excited, even though she knew the concert would be a month away. Doing her usual routine as she turned on the computer, she logged onto ICQ. This time she got a little message from Paul asking if he can call and talk to her over the phone. Her heart skipped a beat as she read it to herself. If she gave him her number then she would be going against her own rules of chatting with strangers over the net. She always trusted her gut instinct and knowing that gut was saying yes. She typed it over the message. “Ter, you home??” she heard Keri call to her. “Yeah!!” she yelled from her room. “I got the tickets!!” “You did?” she appeared at Terrie’s room. “Good, where are we sitting?” “Row I seat 23 and 24.” She said proudly. “That close?? I thought you were gonna go cheap? Do you even have the money?” she asked surprised that her friend could afford the closer seats. Terrie smiled slyly “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to get them.” She reached for her tickets in her purse and handed it to Keri. Suddenly the phone rang “I’ll get it.” Keri said excitedly because she was expecting a call from Andrew, her boyfriend. “Wait, its probably for me…” Terrie said as she followed her friend to the living room, but Keri was already answering it. “Hello?” she paused before her eyes slowly switched over to Terrie, who was looking at her wide eyed. “Yes, and you are??” she asked into the receiver. “Is it Paul?” Terrie asked, unable to hide her excitement. “Look, I don’t know you…and no, you cannot talk to her!” Keri said. Terrie tried to reach for the phone but Keri was quick as she sidestepped her friend with one arm pushing Terrie away. “Keri, stop it!!” she yelled at her friend. “Give it to me!” she gave her a stern look and Keri eventually handed her the phone. “Hello, Paul?” “Uh…Yeah….was that your roommate?” Terrie often told him about her crazy friend. “Yeah, Im sorry, she’s just crazy.” Terrie turned away from Keri’s evil glare. “Hold on.” She turned to her friend “That was rude!” Keri stuck her tongue out at her friend while Terrie returned to her room. She closed the door behind her and put the receiver back on her ear “Okay, where were we?” “You were telling me about your crazy friend.” He chuckled on the other line. “She’s just very overprotected. Anyways, isn’t it a little late in Australia? A few hours difference from Hong Kong isn’t it?” she felt at ease talking to him for the first time. “Yeah, but I stay up late all the time. You know, your voice is very cute. I imagined you to be some hyper girl because you appeared to be that way over the net.” She could feel herself blushing “Yeah, well…you disappointed?” she teased. “No no.” he added quickly “That’s fine. I don’t mind you being average.” She wrinkled her forehead “What do you mean by average?” she was curious. “Well, not everyone appears to be what they say they are.” “Are you calling me a liar?” she felt her face growing red from anger. “What if I was?” he asked. She paused, trying to think of the right words. “You know for someone trying to make a friend, you’re not exactly peachy!” He laughed comfortably into the receiver “Feisty! I like that!! I knew you had it in you.” “That wasn’t very nice.” Her tone calming down as she laughed it off. “My first reaction to your voice was, she’s too nice. I don’t believe anyone’s that nice, so I gave it a shot.” He laughed again. His laugh was almost mesmerizing to her and his voice was so calm and deep, she didn’t know if she was falling for his voice or laugh. They talked for a few hours and eventually he had to leave because it was getting too late. Terrie almost felt sad when she hung up the phone. It was such a great conversation that they had. ************ “Yeah….gotta go, he’s coming.” He quickly hung up the phone. “Who was that?” Eric asked casually as he took a seat on the couch and turned on the television. “Wrong number.” Chris said hastily. Eric frowned “Sheesh, that’s the fifth time today! Maybe we should call the phone company.” It was actually Richard that was looking for Chris but when Eric picked up, Richard was forced to hang up on his friend. “That’s okay, I already threatened those people.” Chris said. He paused and suddenly clapped his hands “That’s right! I wanted to ask you. In a few weeks, we have some plans to go eat at the new place down the street. You want to come?” “Yeah, why not.” Eric wrinkled his eyebrows “But why in a few weeks? Can’t we go this weekend?” “No, Richard is busy.” Chris said nonchalantly. “Well, how about both of us go and we’ll go with him the next time?” Chris shook his head “Nah, he wouldn’t like it very much. Its okay, I think they’re still remodeling the place.” Eric shrugged his shoulders “That’s fine. Whenever.” He continued to watch his movie while Chris got up to get water. He wasn’t use to having to lie to his friend, he gets sweaty and nervous. He was surprised that Eric didn’t catch him. That night Richard got home late, Chris was waiting up for his friend. “Hey, I think our plan worked.” Richard whispered. “Good. Now where’s my change?” he put out his hand, palm facing up. “Oh yeah.” Chris pulled out 10 dollars and placed it on his hand. “Ten dollars??!” Richard yelled. “SHHHH!!! He’s sleeping!” he whispered loudly as he placed a hand harshly over Richard’s mouth. “You’re paying for dinner that night. We’re sitting on row I seat 25-27.” He smiled while his friend scowled. “But you took over $10,000!!!” he whispered back. “Oh, I forgot, our mothers are coming along.” He muffled a laugh when Richard dropped his jaw open. “I was planning to pick up some girls there and you take our mothers along so they can ruin it??” Richard adored his mother but he didn’t think it was appropriate to take them along to a concert. “They’re not sitting with us, it doesn’t matter.” Chris shrugged it off. “Well, that’s okay then.” Richard’s voice was calmer than before. “They’re sitting two seats from us.” Richard grabbed a hold of Chris’s shirt “You bastard!! Don’t you dare play me like that!!” his bad boy tone was useless against Chris. He looked down at Richard and pointed a finger at where his hands were twisting against his shirt “This is new.” He said calmly and Richard quickly let go, giving a weak laugh. “So what if they come along. We’ll still have fun, take two separate cars then.” “Okay…” Richard groaned as he stomped loudly back to his room. "SHHH!!!" this time Eric and Chris hissed in unison.
When she heard the sound of keys rattling outside the door she quickly unlocked it and swung it open, pulling along Keri, who’s keys were still attached to the door. “Where have you been?!” Terrie demanded. “Its called a restaurant. You go there to eat.” Keri said sarcastically. “Since you didn’t want to come along, I still have to eat.” She looked at her friend up and down “Wow, don’t we look nice?” “Yeah, whatever, come on, lets go!” she pushed Keri into her own room “Change!” Keri stopped at the door of her room “Why? I look that bad?” she looked at her own clothes. “No, unless you were planning for the homeless look.” Keri had on her comfortable sweatshirt that had rips and holes all over the front. She couldn’t bare to throw it away because it followed her since 9th grade. Her pants were baggy and looked like cargo pants. “Okay. I guess I’ll change.” In a few minutes, she emerged with a pair of black jeans and a blue top. “Better?” she asked her friend who nodded with a smile. “Come on.” She pulled at Keri’s hand and rushed her out the door. They arrived as one of the earlier ones at the door. The crowd was getting bigger by the moment. Within 10 minutes of the girl’s arrival, the doors opened. They were escorted to the front area of the auditorium. The seats around them were practically empty. Terrie took her seat comfortably with a huge grin on her face. She was always the early bird, she never liked to be late to any event. Keri turned to her friend and gave her a dirty look “No one’s even here!” she pointed to the seats around them. “Well, I like being early…” she pouted at her friend who had a scowl on her face. ************** “Eric, come on, we’re going to be late!!!” Chris glanced at his watch. Eric was still changing in his room. “We have reservation, guys.” Eric said calmly through the door. “Man, what’s your problem.” He smoothed out his black jacket. They waited for Richard to get out of the restroom before they headed off to the concert. Eric didn’t realize that they weren’t going to the restaurant until they parked in the building across from the auditorium where hundred of people stood outside waiting for their turn to enter. “You guys lied to me??” he sounded a bit angry. “Come on, its just a concert. We paid for the tickets.” Chris reasoned. “You guys owe me.” Eric said grumpily. Richard and Chris spotted their mothers standing by the door as they waved to them. They stood in line with the women and headed into the concert area. The ushers guided them to their seats. “We’re not sitting with you three?” Chris’s mother asked. “No, mom. The tickets were separated. How about we ask the two people to move over?” his mother nodded with an agreeing smile. “Excuse me, can you two please move over two seats?” he asked the girl in the blue. Keri turned to Terrie who shrugged her shoulders as she prepared to move over. When they settled in their seats it was in the order of Terrie, Keri, Chris, Eric, Richard and their mothers at the end of the row. The lights were slowly dimmed as the curtains opened up showing the live band in the back. Terrie squealed like a kid as she watched with excitement of her first concert. Leon Lai soon appeared as he greeted the fans and began his first song. Terrie seemed mesmerized by his voice as she watched and listen intently, not wanting to miss a beat. Keri was trying to concentrate on the concert but the guy sitting in front of her had the biggest head. She squirmed in her seat trying to get a better view. “You want to switch seats?” Chris asked politely. She shook her head “Its okay. Thanks.” She returned her attention back to the concert. Richard was gazing at the girl with the red skirt, he leaned in to Chris and motioned him to come closer “That girl’s cute.” He pointed to Terrie. Chris nodded “Yeah, I know. But she looks a little stuck up. She didn’t even say hi to us or anything.” “Really? I saw her staring at you earlier.” Eric said. Chris raised his eyebrows with interest as he turned to the girls. Eric gave a sly smile to himself ‘Payback, boys.’ He thought evily. Chris’s eyes tried to capture Terrie’s but it seemed useless as she was too into the concert. When Terrie turned to say something to Keri, she noticed Chris’s gaze. One of her pet peves were guys staring at her, she was very self conscious when it came to her looks. Chris smiled sweetly as he gave her a slight wink of his eye. Terrie turned away trying to act like he just didn’t do that. Chris’s smile dropped as he turned back to the guys to tell him what just happened. Eric had a huge goofy grin on his face while Richard covered his face in disappointment for his friend. “You lied didn’t you?” Chris whispered to his friend. Eric just smiled as he pushed his chin up in the air. “Hey, I’m hungry, lets go get something to eat.” Richard whispered. “Man, we just ate!!” Eric said annoyingly. This guy was tiny but he’s always hungry, it was something he found disturbing about Richard. “I’ll go with you.” Chris offered. “Eh, wait for me.” Eric said when the guys began to get up from their seats. They walked outside to get something to eat, they found a little concession stand and ordered some food. Inside, Terrie’s eyes were still glued to the singer on the stage, while Keri was fumbling with the camera that she carried in her hands. “How do you work this thing?” she pulled it up closer to her face as she examined the little machine. Terrie turned to her friend as she took the camera from her hands, with one little click of the finger, the tiny camera responded with a little buzzing sound. “The green light says its ready for photos.” “Hey, those guys were staring at you.” She nodded to the empty seats next to her. Terrie shrugged her shoulders “So?” she was so oblivious to guys. She didn’t like being hit on nor stared at. They quiet down when the guys returned. It was towards the end of the concert when Chris noticed the camera in Keri’s hands “Can I borrow that?” he pointed to the camera. Keri glanced at her friend before handing it to Chris, she thought he wanted to look at it. Instead he got up and walked to the end of the aisle and took a few shots of Leon up close. Terrie looked at her friend “That was nice.” She commented. When Chris returned to the seat, he smiled at the girls “Thanks!” Keri said with genuine gratitude. Terrie thanked him but she guess he didn’t hear her cause he didn’t acknowledge her. She returned back to the concert. Soon, the last song was sung as Leon closed it with the last song. Terrie couldn’t help but feel sad, she didn’t want it to end. He sounded so perfect that night, she doesn’t remember ever hearing anyone sing live that well. When the lights turned on, everyone got up and began to leave the filled auditorium. Richard showed immediate interest as he walked next to Terrie “Hi, I’m Richard.” He put out a friendly hand. Terrie shook it shyly as she smiled in return “I’m Theresa, they call me Terrie.” “What can I call you?” he asked flirtatiously. “Anything you want.” She meant either Theresa or Terrie. “I think cutie is good.” He laughed comfortably. Chris was talking to Keri but his eyes wandered back to Terrie and Richard who seem to be hitting it off. Eric was shy as he reeled away from the girls and talked to his friends’ mothers. When they got outside, the guys asked to exchange numbers with the girls. Keri was friendly as she shrugged her shoulders “Sure.” She jotted down their apartment number and handed it to Chris. “How about yours?” he looked at Terrie. She raised her eyebrows “Same number.” “Oh, you guys live together? You’re not sisters are you?” Richard teased. Terrie laughed as she shook her head “No, we’re best friends.” “Us too. That quiet guy over there is Eric.” He pointed to his friend who was busy talking to his mother. The girls nodded politely without commenting. “We’ll call you next week okay? We gotta go.” He waved to Eric and his mother who was calling to him and Richard. They jogged over to them as they gave the girls a quick wave goodbye. “I claim her first!” Richard said quickly. Chris gave him a glare “You can’t claim her, she has the right to chose.” He said reasonably. “Well then, I claim the first right to go after her.” He smiled to himself. “Fine. Gosh, she’s so cute!” he gushed while Richard nodded in agreement. Eric slowed down as he waited for the guys. “They’re not that cute.” He rolled his eyes. The other two didn’t comment, they understood why Eric wouldn’t find the girls attractive. He had completely different tastes then his friends. ************ “I told you they were interested!” Keri wrapped her arms around her friend as they walked to the opposite parking lot from where the guys parked. “Yeah, whatever.” She laughed. She remembered how Richard was joking with her and he seemed friendly enough. Keri went straight to sleep while Terrie stayed up and chatted with Paul. She told him about her first concert experience and about the guys they met. “Well, you need to be careful. You never know what kind of psychos lurk around concerts to pick on girls.” She smiled “I sense a little jealousy in your voice.” “Well of course I’m concerned. I don’t want anything to happen to my little mui mui.” They talked on for another hour before they hung up. That was her usual routine every night. Chatting with Paul, she always wondered if his bill would skyrocket because of her. Yet, when she brought it up, he would change the subject.
Chapter 2
“Did you buy the tickets yet?” Richard asked Chris over the cell phone. He was still working late while his friend was already home with Eric.
Chapter 3
A few weeks past like a blink of an eye. The concert day was that Saturday night. Terrie was dressed in a knee low red skirt that hugged her legs, while her top was a plain black shirt. She wore nice black open toed shoes and a black jacket to keep her warm at night. She paced impatiently in their apartment waiting for Keri to come home. She tried calling her cell phone but it wouldn’t go through. They had one hour until the concert started, although the auditorium was only a few blocks from their apartment, Terrie still wanted to be there early.
“I don’t like being late!!” Chris argued. Soon the door opened and Eric walked casually out, he didn’t understand why his friend was being so pushy.
