Amy Chan - Vivian Leung Siu Bing
Philip Cheung - Julian Cheung Chi Lam
The busy street seemed to disappeared as the young girl walked down the sidewalk. People bumping her from all directions as she walked on, ignoring everyone in sight. She just lost her job because she had refused to get her boss his lunch. She had told herself before that she would never let him stomp all over her. Never saying a thank you when she gets his lunch, instead he would put out his hand expecting his change back. She was tired of it and now she's jobless. How will she ever pay for her apartment? 'Oh God, if my parents find out!' she began to panic as she looked up. She stood in front of a studio. 'Where in the world am I?' she looked around like a lost puppy. Wondering how she even got there, but it seemed like fate had something planned for this young girl.
Someone was posting something up at a bulleton board. She came closer to find that the famous singer/actor, Philip Cheung is looking for a personal assistant. She loves his singing, not to mention his acting skills! She saw a phone number on the flyer as she punched it into her cell phone.
Nervous as can be, she waited til the third ring as someone picked up. An overly annoyed voice answered "Hello?"
"Uh, I wanted to ask you about the flyer for the personal assistant job. How do I make an appointment for an interview?" she was careful to be polite as she listened for directions.
"Go to the front gate and tell the security guard the code is 5678, he will let you in. Go to room 5B and pick a number, then wait for your turn and someone will assist you." The phone went dead.
The young girl looked at her cell phone, 'That lady hung up on me!' She wanted to ask what day she should come back, but it looks like they are doing it the same day.
Smoothing out her pinstripe pants and white collared shirt. Pulling out a black rubberband as she tied her long hair back to make herself look more presentable. Pulling out her eye glasses, she didn't really need them since she had 20/20 vision. But her best friend told her that people look more trustworthy when they where glasses. Not sure if it was true or not but she wasn't about to take any chances on this job. Walking straight to the guard at the entrance, she did what the annoyed lady told her over the phone. The guard directed her through the double doors of the studio and follow the long line. Her forehead crinkled up as she entered the doors. Expecting a few people to be in line, instead it looked more like a hundred people were waiting. Everyone looked professional in their suits, not to mention the beautiful girls that looked like models. Amy looked down at her own rumpled clothes as she pushed her glasses closer to the bridge of her nose. She couldn't possibly stand a chance.
She waited for about three hours before her number was called. "Number 148!" she heard the familiar annoyed voice call out. Taking a deep breath as she walked up to the front of the room where the tired lady led her into another room across the way. It was a lot more quiet then the one she was sitting in for the past few hours. Looking around as she began to worry 'What if he laughs at me? What if I act all stupid? Oh God, please let me be calm.' she prayed. Amy saw one lady walk by, her head faced the ground as she walked out.
"NEXT!" she heard someone yell. She jumped in surprise, holding her stomach as she slowly got up. 'This is not the time to be nervous' she tried to psych herself. Walking through the same hallway where the last girl came from, Amy looked around for people. It looked like an empty hall as she walked towards the table with three men sitting across from her. Sitting down on the chair they pointed to, she noticed none of them were Philip Cheung. 'I guess he has people doing his dirty work for him.' she snickered to herself.
"Now, Miss..." the guy on the left waved his hand in a circular motion.
"Amy Chan" she said quickly.
The same guy gave a fake smile "Yes. Miss Chan. Now, do you have any experience what so ever?" Amy looked confused "I mean in being a personal assistant."
"I was a personal secretary for 3 years." she was quick to answer.
"Fine. Thats great. Why did you leave this job or are you still employed?" the middle guy asked.
She thought quickly, what if they knew she quit because she didn't want to get her boss's lunch? "I actually just quit today." The guys raised their eyebrows in curiosity. "It wasn't challenging to me. I wanted something different, something not so repetative." It was a great answer, she knew because it won nods and smiles from the three intimidating guys.
"Well, you see Miss Chan. We are here to screen all those people that are not good for this job. Mr. Cheung is a very busy man, he couldn't possibly go through all the people out there. But it seems that you have past the first test. So congradulations, please go down that hall to the room on your left. Mr. Cheung will meet personally with you there." The third guy pointed down the hall to his left.
She smiled as she got up, thanking them politely. "Oh, one more thing." the middle guy stopped her. "If you faint, you will not past the second test." he seemed serious as he warned her.
She walked down the hall as she thought to herself 'Why would I faint? He's only human! I mean, sure he's cute and he has a wonderful voice, but faint? Hmph!' Knocking on the closed door, she heard his familiar voice. "Come in."
Opening the door, she saw him, standing up. His hair was a perfectly combed and his casual gray turtleneck and blue jeans was a perfect match. Amy felt her knees go weak, 'No, Im NOT going to faint!' she scolded herself.
Pulling out his hand to shake hers as he reached over the table. "Hi, Miss.."
"Chan." she quickly snapped out of the star daze as she took his hand firmly. His winning smile made her stomach turn as he pointed to the seat across from him.
"Congradulations for coming this far. Now tell me, what makes you think you can be my personal assistant?" he sat back in his chair as he watched her face carefully. She was a little plain and those glasses have got to go but otherwise, she wasn't that bad.
"Well, Im a very hard worker. You can call me at any time and I will be on time, by your side. Im very punctual, so you don't have to ever wait for me. Unless Im on my death bed." she meant it as a joke to calm herself down. But he found it funny as he chuckled.
Reaching out for his cup of water, his eyes never leaving her face. He accidently knocked over the cup and it began to spill all over the place. Amy quickly reached into her purse and pulled out a bag of napkins as she began to dab at the table "And, Im like a pharmacy. You need something? Ive got it." giving him her biggest smile as she handed him a napkin.
Nodding his head thoughtfully, thinking of another question to ask her. "You know, Miss Chan. There are alot of girls here that want this job. But only a handful that are capable of this job. Some seemed to be firm and knowledgable but then they began to show their true side" she didn't understand what he was saying but she just nodded to be polite. Plus she didn't want to look stupid. Philip got up from his chair as he walked around the little table that separated the two. "I know Im a fairly big star and I have a lot of fans that are women. They are quite crazy, not to mention at times are like mobs." he bent down close to her face as he leaned in, an inch from her smooth face. "The girl that gets this job is very lucky." his voice was a whisper now. She could feel her face get hot and its probably as red as a tomato, but she never kept her eyes off of him. "You know there's a lot of rumors about me and other actresses. But none of them are true. I get some rumors about girls that are out of my league because paparazzi's found me talking to girls in the street or restaurant. While they never thought it was probably just a friend. They would never ever think of my personal assistant being...you know."
She was more confused than ever. 'What in the world was he talking about?' "What?" she dared ask him.
"Lets just say its my way of getting a little action. My last assistant...couldn't keep up with me." he smiled that charming smile she often saw onscreen. "You think you can?"
'Was he suggesting?' Is he saying what she thinks he's saying? "How dare you!" she slapped his face as she stood up. Outraged by his attempt to seduce her. "I don't want the job that bad!" she began to walk towards the door when he began to laugh. Clapping his hands humorously. "What's so funny?" she exclaimed.
"You were great!!" he held on his stomach to calm himself down as he plopped on the table. "The last 20 girls all went for my offer except you!" He shook his head in amazement "You have more integrity than all those girls combined!" he seemed to be jumping for joy.
'What a cruel test!' she thought to herself as she watched him dial his hand phone. Amy began to wonder if it was a mistake coming there for the interview. "Miss Lee, yeah, stop the interviews. I've found my girl." he giggled lightly into the phone "Her name? A Miss..." he covered the mouthpiece as he looked up at her, his eyes questioning.
"Amy." she said quietly.
"Miss Amy Chan. Yes, okay...thank you." he hung up the phone as he reached over to her shake her hand. Jumping back at his sudden movement, Amy calmed herself when she realized he just wanted to shake her hand. She shook it firmly and quickly let go.
"Im done here then?" she began to open the door.
"Of course. Your first job is to get me some coffee. I like it light with two bags of cream and one bag of sugar. Stir it before you give it to me." he said firmly.
Nodding her head as she walked out the door to get his coffee. 'That was weird.' she thought to herself. The rest of the day seemed to be a daze to her as he asked her to get little stuff for him. Food, water and every once in a while a neck rub. Although he kidded about the neck rub everytime, it still made Amy nervous. He was a lot more different then she thought.
Amy was use to Philip's needs within a month. She caught on to everything that he wanted or needed. She could tell when he needed coffee, when he wanted to be alone, when he needed water. Following him to the shoot sight as he filmed his new movie. She stood in awe seeing him at work. He was absolutely incredible! So poise and perfect with every shot. Mad when he had to be and kind when it was time to be nice. Philip was practically born to be an actor and a singer. She heard him sing acapella a few times when he was alone in his little trailer. She stood outside waiting for him to call her, each time he started singing she would smile. His voice could melt a million girls' hearts.
His next movie began shooting within a few weeks, his role was a doctor so he needed glasses. He went to the optometry center of the studio to get it fitted, but was surprised to see no one in there. Amy followed him to see if what he wanted for lunch when she noticed that he was sitting in an empty room, probably waiting for someone to return. "Philip?" she was on a first name basis with him within a week. He didn't like 'Mr. Cheung'. "What are you doing here?"
"I have to get my fake glasses fitted." he said almost a touch of impatience in his voice.
Amy smiled as she quickly walked over to him. "Come over here." she pulled him up to his feet as she walked over the room where the eye glass tools hung. Putting on his fake glasses for him, she squinted her eyes thoughtfully as she noticed what was wrong with the glasses. One side was too high and it didn't wrap around his ears correctly. Picking up a tool as she carefully adjusted it. Dipping the ear peices into the hot sand for a few seconds, it was easier to bend them when they were warm. When she finished her adjustments, she put the frame back onto his face and it fit like a glove. "How does that feel?" she asked.
"It couldn't be more perfect!" he gushed as he looked at himself in the mirror. Admiring her work, "How did you learn this?"
"I use to work in an optometrist office." it was a summer job that kept her bills paid.
"Is there anywhere you didn't work?" he teased. They quickly returned to the set, ready to go to work.
The next few months flew by. She had a short break when he was working on his next album entitled 'Love has many faces', he wrote a few of the songs himself. When he finished the album, his next project was a music video for the single. Choosing the main girl for the video was always fun for him. It meant seeing at least 100 beautiful girls in one room. This time he wanted Amy to be one of the judges, since she knew his personality pretty well now.
That day of the screening of the girls, Amy came early to set up the tables in the front of a big room where they hold auditions. The chairs where the girls sat were placed to the left, each one numbered from 1 to 100. The girls were let in one by one as each went through a height measurement room. They had to be from 5'3 to 5'6, no taller, no shorter. In the end the chairs were all filled. They had to add in a few more chairs because there were more girls than they anticipated. Philip was not showing up until the last cut. Each girl was to introduce herself and the judges had to check her on poise, confidence, smile and voice. Amy took her job seriously as she marked them strictly. After two hours, the group was cut down to 52 girls.
The second cut was done by testing how many girls could dance. Because in the video, there will be a dancing part with Philip. Another 26 were cut. The remaining girls were chosen carefully to perfection. They were the right height, beautiful and they were able to dance. They were also going to end up in the final cut.
After what seemed to be a long day. Philip finally showed up as the final 26 girls gushed at his presence. He smiled his unforgettable smile at them as he proudly walked through the door and took his seat next to Amy behind the table. "How is looking?" he asked her, knowing that she would be honest. He would always come to her for the truth, while the others tend to want to please him instead.
"Not too good. These girls seemed decent. But I personally don't approve of them." She was being brutally honest.
"Well, tell me who you like?" he whispered while the girls continue to gawk at their idol.
"Thats not fair! You would be bais then!" she whispered loudly.
"Oh come on!" he said exasperatedly.
"NO!" Amy whispered back. She suddenly smiled micheviously "Hey, I have another plan to cut some more. Did you notice how they are staring at you like you're a God or something?" he nodded, grinning. "Well, why don't you dance with each one and see which one faints? I bet there a handfull of them will."
He nodded eagerly to her plan. "That's a great idea!" he looked at her, pointing his head to the center of the room.
"What?" she looked at him confused.
"Announce it." he smiled, he knew she was terrified of public speaking.
She leered at him threatingly, but decided to get up. Shocked by her sudden confidence, he tilted his head thoughtfully as she took her place in the center of the room. Clearing her throat to catch the girl's attention "Okay, now each one of you will have 15 seconds each to dance with Mr. Cheung. So lets start with the first girl there." She pointed to the first girl seated on her left. The girl quickly got up as she waited for Philip to come to her. He got up slowly and with a hand in one pant pocket, the other one holding out to the nervous girl. She took his hand slowly as he pulled his hand out of his pocket and placed it around her waist. Amy saw her legs quivering like a child in the snow. When the music began to play, the girl fainted into his arms. The security quickly came to take the girl away. Amy gave him a wink, one down and 25 to go.
One by one each girl got their chance, about more 5 fainted and the other 10 were so nervous that they steped on his foot. Obviously, they were booted out. The remaining 10 girls were chosen. No one had thought about the final test because they thought it would be just one left. Amy pulled Philip to the side as she whispered "Which one do you like?"
"I don't know, there's about three that could do this job."
"Well, don't be so picky and just choose one!"
His face suddenly lit up "I have an idea! Just follow my lead." He pulled Amy to the center of the room again as he announced to the ten girls "Well, since you will be acting in this music video, I would like to see a little bit of your skills. This video has to do a lot with plain chemistry, I want to see which girls can do this. As a demonstration I will act out a few different parts with Miss Chan here. Remember, originality is the key."
"What are you doing?" she asked through clenched teeth. "I can't act!"
"Just follow me." he whispered back with a smile.
Everyone in the room seemed to be staring at the two in the center as they began their little play. Philip turned his back at Amy as his faced turned sad "Amy, I don't think I can do this."
Nervous as she was, she thought about what harm could happen. Afterall, she wasn't the girl in the video, it wouldn't matter if she made a fool out of herself. She walked over to Philip and put a gentle hand on his shoulder "Do what?"
"Give that speech. I know I should be proud to be chosen, but you know my fear with public speaking." he turned to her, his face full of concern.
She glanced at the ground and suddenly looked up at him. Her face bright with a huge smile "I know. You remember what you did for me when we were small? I had to perform at the ballet recital and I was so nervous."
He shook his head "Not really."
Amy sighed "Don't you remember anything?" she exaggerated her voice with annoyance "Put up your hand." he did as she told and she covered her palm over his "You said that you were very confident, actually you were overly confident, so you gave me some. See? The energy moves from me to you through our hands. Can you feel it?" he instantly smiled. "Since you gave me all your confidence when we were small, Im just returning it back to you." putting down her hand as she grinned at him.
"Thank you, Amy." lost in the moment of their acting, he hugged her warmly. The rest of the people clapped their hands, interrupting the two's moment of acting. Amy smiled shyly as she blushed lightly. "Well, wasn't that wonderful?" he asked everyone. There were a few whistles from the guys and some of the girls were shocked while some of them looked bored.
One by one they stood in the center with Philip again. This time using their imaginations as they acted with him in a scene that he starts. He was disappointed because all of them were not as good as Amy.
She instantly notice something was wrong when he was quiet for a while as he decided which girl to choose. "Hey, you have an answer yet?" she leaned in close to him. Not wanting anyone else to hear their coversation.
"No..." he looked up and it was the first time he really noticed her eyes. It was very pretty. He suddenly took her glasses off, pulling it up to the light as he looked through it "You don't have any prescription in these. Why do you need it?"
"I..." she was lost for words "Okay okay, I wore them so I could look smarter, okay?" he found her secret.
"Well, it makes you look like a dork." he folded them and placed them in his pocket. Leaning from her face as he examined her intricate features. She was quite adorable looking without the glasses. "Turn around." she gave him an odd look but eventually did as he told. Pulling out her little rubberband that she used to tie her hair up everyday, her flowing hair fell around her face in a perfect cut. It was layered around her face. "Now why are you hiding that beautiful mane like that?" he threw the rubberband away as he got up. "Thank you ladies, I have made my decision. Miss Amy Chan will be in my video. I appreciate your time and effort." he bowed politely as the girls got up and left, disappointed.
"What do you think you're doing?" Amy demanded as she looked around for her rubberband.
Philip smiled as he walked over to her "Just like I said, I chose you. I mean, who more perfect then my own assistant that knows me well. She can act. Of course it was dumb of me to barely notice how pretty she really is. But its better late than never."
She smiled at his attempt to compliment her "Well, thank you. But Im warning you, I get nervous in front of the camera."
"There's been a camera here this whole time and you weren't nervous." he said in confusion. It was standing at the back of the room facing the front. Yet Amy never onced noticed. He saw her face go blank as he slowly turned her head to the back where the camera was.
"Well, I'll be...I didn't even see that." she exclaimed in surprise.
"There you go! Just do that at the shoot and you'll be fine." he smiled as they group began to wrap up. "Come on, I'll take you to dinner."
Nodding her head "I'll go get my purse first." she ran back into the next room as she searched for her little black knit purse. Pulling it up as she opened it to take out her lipstick. Holding it up as she put it on carefully. She had a sudden urge to sing. Letting her flowing, angelic voice come out as she sang a popular song.
"Another hidden talent, I see." Philip stood from the doorway watching her with shock. It was the first time he felt goosebumps, not to mention butterflies in his stomache.
Amy gasp as she turned around, instantly she stopped singing. "Oh gosh, you scared me."
"And you surprise me! Lets see, I have found so many new things about you today. Singing, acting, beautiful and talented. Any other secrets you're hiding?"
Her face turned a crimson red, blushing profusely. "Im not that good."
He smiled at the humble girl "Yes you are! Come on, Im hungry!" They left for dinner that night.
It was a brand new night for Philip, discovering so much about a person he thought he knew so well. Yet she still seemed to amaze him each day. He couldn't help but feel closer to her from that night on. Their dinner was casual, yet you could feel some sort of tension between them. Maybe from Philip gazing at her so long.
The next day, he talked to his album manager to create a new song for him and Amy. He had asked her to sing with him and she had reluctantly agreed after he practically begged her. The music video was finished within days because of their quick connection. They were naturals when it came to acting together.
Within months, he had her in his movies, playing little roles like his sidekick and eventually she played opposite of Philip in the leading girl role. Sparks between them started from that night he took her to dinner after the audition for the lead girl in his music video. They pretended like it never happened, until one day at a press conference for Philip and Amy's new movie. One reporter asked "Are there any special sparks between you two? There are so many rumors that you two are dating because there was no way a new person could be such a natural with an experienced actor like you."
Amy smiled, ready to answer when Philip spoke up instead "Yes, as a matter of fact, I wanted to announce to everyone that Miss Chan and I are officially dating." his grin told her that it wasn't a publicity stunt and he was serious. Putting his arm around her shoulders as the cameras flashed away at the new couple. They both knew there was no denying it. They worked well together in almost everything. First acting and he eventually got her into singing.
