In mathematics, what is the mantissa?
 
The mathematical definition of a mantissa is the "fraction part" (part after the separator) of the coefficient of floating-point numbers and normalized numbers in scientific notation. Or, the decimal part of a logarithm. For example, in the logarithm 6.1995, the mantissa is 0.1995.
