The Rivals, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. A character in the book is Mrs. Malaprop, who constantly confuses words to humorous effect. A malapropism is the substitution of an incorrect word or for a word with a similar sound in which the resulting phrase makes no sense but often creates a comic effect.
