Who was the first to break Babe Ruth's record 60 home runs, in 1961?
 
NY Yankees super-slugger Roger Maris. Some fans were upset, because Ruth had played 154 games in a season, compared to Maris' 162. The controversy was finally settled in 1991, when baseball commissioner Fay Vincent declared the record official.
