Which country constructed the defensive line called the Maginot Line?
 
France. It was a system of fortifications erected by the French in the 1930s, along their border with Germany, designed to keep the German forces from crossing in to France. It was named for one of its chief proponents, Andre Maginot, who was then France's Minister of War. The defensive line, which was made of thick concrete and included living quarters, underground rail lines and storehouses and had a line of heavy artillery, proved to be not as impregnable as the French hoped. The fortifications were connected to the Belgian system, of which the strongest point was Fort Eben-Emael. The Germans broke through at this point with a unique assault that incorporated gliders and shaped explosive charges. The surrender of the fort, in less than two days, allowed the invasion of France
