Telephone operator. The first telephone operators, back in 1878, were teenage boys. Boys will be boys, however, and eventually the Boston telephone exchange hired Emma Nutt as the first female telephone operator. She was an instant success. Within hours, her sister was hired, as well. Female operators were universally female until the 1970s, when men began to join their ranks.
