In the 19th century, English chemist and pharmacist John Walker accidently came up with the thought of coating the end of a wooden stick with antimony sulfide, potassium chlorate, gum and starch. Once dried, he found he could ignite a fire by striking the stick anywhere. He called them "Congreves" after Congreve's rocket.
