"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. Brom Bones is the nickname of Abraham Van Brunt, the town bully and rival of Ichabod Crane for the love of Katrina Van Tassel. While not outright stated in the story, it is implied that Bones is really the Horseman.
