In the late 1920s, at the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade the balloons were released into the sky. The first year this occurred, they all burst. The next year they were redesigned with safety valves that allowed them to float a few days.
 
What was also sewn onto the balloons that made finding them special?
Address labels were sewn onto the balloons, so that whomever found and mailed them back would recived a gift certificate to Macy's!
