After earning his degree, he became a faculty member at Harvard, in the School of Mechanical Dentistry, and he went on to patent his invention of the oblate palate, a device to help people with a cleft palate. He also received a patent for a small but much-used device for a sport he loved. What was this invention?

In the city of Lvov (or Lviv), Ukraine there is a building with an interesting feature. On one external wall is a game, and clues to the game are scattered about the city's landmarks. What sort of game is this?
 
A crossword puzzle. The side of the building has squares - 19 across and 34 high - which make up the crossword grid. The clues to the words are found around the city in parks, at theaters, fountains and more. At night, lights in every square are turned on, revealing the answers. The Cyrillic alphabet is used, and the entire project was created to bring visitors to the highly cultural city.

Once used by many in their homes, modern technology has caused the mangle to be used almost exclusively by professionals. What is a mangle?
 
A mangle (or wringer) is a device, once made from cast iron, with two wooden rollers and a handle on a wheel. It was used to wring clothes dry after washing. With the invention of washers and then dryers, the mangle is used mainly by professional cleaners now, to press and fold sheets and such.

John Darling was a comic strip spin-off from Tom Batiuk's popular Funky Winkerbean. It ran from March 1979 to August 1991. What was interesting about how the strip ended?
 
Batiuk had a contract dispute with his syndicate, so he decided to kill off the main character. In the second to last strip, Darling was shot by an unknown assailant. The murder was eventually solved in the Funky Winkerbean strip, in 1997.

Triffids are highly venomous fictional plants.  They feed on rotting meat, are able to uproot themselves and move around on their three appendages, have a deadly stinger and appear to communicate with each other.  They are the main antagonist in John Wyndham's sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids", which was also made into a movie "The Day of the Triffids" and a sequel "The Night of the Triffids".
