The Music

First, a little bit about how Savage Garden began. Farther down you'll find discography information.

In The Beginning...

In January 1993, Darren and Daniel met via an advertisement that Daniel placed in Time Off magazine, a local Brisbane music newspaper. He and his brother were part of a band called Red Edge, which was looking for a singer. The advertisement read:
'SERIOUS LEAD VOCALIST WANTED FOR COMMERCIAL MUSICAL OUTFIT PRESENTLY FINANCED BY MAJOR PUBLISHING COMPANY'

Darren contacted Daniel, and had an audition. He supposedly sang the female soul part in "Skid Row (Downtown)." He went about 3 notes above his usual octave. It went horribly, as his voice cracked on the high notes, but Daniel saw potential and Darren became the lead singer of the band. They toured as Red Edge across Queensland until 1994. After several months, Darren wanted to sing music he wrote, instead of other bands' material. He and Daniel left Red Edge to form their own group, which eventually became known as Savage Garden. The name comes from one of Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles (Ann Rice is Darren's favorite author). The first song Darren and Daniel wrote together was "A Thousand Words," which they wrote at Dan's house in Brisbane. By 1995, they had 5 songs written including: "To The Moon & Back" and "Mine." They sent a demo to 150 recording companies/labels and were initaially rejected by all except Roadshow Music. By the end of 1998, their self-titled debut album had sold over 11 million copies worldwide.
