Do you believe in fate? It leads you to your destination… Fate is prearranged for you, before you even come into this world, in another time, in another life, it is already planned for you… beyond your wildest drams, beyond your craziest imagination, it is there… and as you walked the earth, in search of a certain someone, the special person who is your other half, who had been there all along with you, in your heart, in your soul, simply part of you, with whom your fate is bound to forever. It is all there, a choice made for you, one that you could never change...or, can you?
The story is basically about alec liking this girl called april (vicki), and his
parents like her too. she's your quiet and understanding type, but alec always
feels that there is something missing. then april, being the quite selfish
person that she is, breaks up temporarily with alec because she wants to go to
US to work. alec was devastated, at least, he thinks that he is devastated, and
that's when apple comes in (also by vicki). she is april’s twin, adopted by
another family in the US as her real mom is really poor, and at twenty, she
finally found out her true identity and realised that there is someone that
looked just like her on earth, in hongkong. so she comes searching for april in
hk, and meets alec. of course alec misunderstood her for april, and because
apple knows that alec is april’s boyfriend (by some way or another, which you
would find out later in the story) she decided to play a trick on him, being the
cute and mischevious girl that she is. from alec, she found out that aapril was
not in hk, and how he is really happy that she's back. being a kind girl and
wanting alec to be happy, apple decides to lie to him for a little bit longer,
however, as time passes, she found herself falling in love with him...
meanwhile, alec had been feeling a bit weird, there's a strange flutter in his
heart that had never been there before april left for the US...and that’s when
the troubles began…
*Somewhere heavenly*
He looked at her tear-streaked face, and his eyes softened. “Don’t you
understand, Ke er? This is their fate, their destiny. There is nothing anybody
or anything can do to change it. Let it be Ke er, just let it be….” He broke
off, looking at her sad teary eyes, and was astonished by what he saw there.
That burning fire in her eyes despite her tears, so bright..so strong. It was
determination, steel hard cold determination, that contrasted sharply with her
soft nature. With a tremendous effort he broke the eye contact with her, and
shaking his head, walked out of the room.
“But master…” Ke er pleaded, making one last effort. The Tian Shen did not
reply. He never knew that Ke er felt this strongly about this, about the mere
lives of two common human beings, lives which he was about to change forever….

Sighing, Alec leaned down to kiss her on her soft sensuous lips. He wondered
why he did not feel anything. It was as if his mind was dislocated from his
body. He was doing everything mechanically, it almost felt like a duty, a chore.
His mind was somewhere faraway, looking at all this quietly, without comments,
without thoughts, without feelings… just..watching. He lifted up his head, and
April sighed contentedly. Opening her eyes, she smiled at him wonderously with
that gentle smile of hers, entwining her arms around her neck. This intimate
gesture which would have warmed anybody did nothing to Alec.
“ I wonder why I hardly feel anything. Where is that ridiculously happy
feeling you are supposed to have when you are in love? Where is that warm
contentment and satisfaction which should be there in your heart when you’re
near her, that certain someone who make your knees turn into mush?”
“Nonsense, Alec Su!” he chided himself for these unfaithful thoughts. “You
mush have been watching too much cheesy and romantic movies. Yes, that must be
the problem. Well, those are just stories, they don’t happen in real life.
It’s time you look around at the world, at reality. There is no such thing as
true love that never distinguishes, that only happen in fairy tales. Boy meets
girl, girl meets boy. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy. There, it’s just that
simple.”
But if that’s really the case then why does it sound like like he’s trying
so very hard to convince himself? Closing his eyes, he sighed, trying to block
out those irritating thoughts, trying to enjoy April’s embrace, but his mind
was a million million miles away…
Somewhere, deep among the celestial clouds, Ke er sat alone.
With her face in her hands, with eyes hopeless and bleak, with face that was
straked with tears,she thought:
"Poor thing, he had never experienced true love before, which is why he is
mistaking those brotherly feelings he felt for April for love."
Her face suddenly darkened as she thought of what was to come for him, and for
her. He would experience ture love soon, all right, and he would soon discover
too that love does not always have a nice, warm ending, like what they made it
out to be in the movies. Sure, love gives people this wonderfully fufilling
feeling, but with it comes tears, troubles, bitterness...... too much feelings,
too much love, would only hurt them more, If only they, with a prearranged fate
so much like her, knew... If only they....knew.
*Flashblack*
" No Ke er, you...you can't die on me, you just can't. Don't leave me,
please, Ke er, I'm begging you, I love you so much...so much, please just wake
up. Remember our promise, Ke er? Remember those bright, beautiful dreams we
planned? I promised you a briiliant future, where there's only me, and you, I
promised you that I would marry you, despite all those obstacles. We have gone
through so much, how can you leave me now!!? We haven't realise our dreams, or
hopes, our fantasies yet. Please Ke er, just wake up.. and then hand in hand, we
can go reach for the stars, please....."
Even as Jem spoke, Ke er's soul was leaving her body. She was rising up, up. So
high, so high. She concentrated with all her might to stop her body from rising
up. Ke er felt surprisingly light, and a haziness began settling in her mind,
yet she felt clear like never before. This was her fate, her destiny, to be
seperated from her love forever. Tears flowed freely down her face, her cheeks
felt raw, and her eyes were swollen. The cool crisp spring night air was cuuting
into her skin, a coldness that had never been there previously, and Ke er began
to shiver uncontrobally. She knew it was useless to fight, everthing was beyond
her ability, but nevertheless, she concentrated every whim of her to will
herself to stay put, for the last goodbye....
" Farewell my love"she wispered.
As she reached out her arm towards Jem, an unimaginable pain was tearing her,
slowly, bit by bit, into pieces.. the pain of losing him anguished her, wrecked
her. She knew that she would never be at ease... there was no hope for
salvation...never.....
* End of flashback*
Ke er youched her face, it was wet. That came as a surprise, all these years,
Ke er had never cried before, ever since that fateful night.
"No, I'm not going to let another couple suffer at the cruel hands of fate,
not if I have a say in it."
And with that, Ke er walked out of her room, full of determination.

Feeling suddenly free, Apple packed her clothes into her duffel bag. Beside
her, her sister, Cecil, was lying on her four-poster bed, absentmindedly
flipping through a magazine.
" So, how long would you be there?"
" Umm, once I see her, and get to the bottom of this."
" You..you sure you would be back?" Cecil tried to sound nonchalent,
but her worries were clearly evident.
" Well, that I would have to consider, maybe Hong Kong would be so fun that
I totally forget about coming back." Apple grinned playfully, but stop when
she saw the look on Cecil's face.
She had never knew that Cecil was so insecure about this, and it warmed her to
her core to know that Cecil cared this much about her.
Suddenly serious, she turned towards Cecil.
" Look, Cecil, I want you to understand, you are still my sister, though
not by blood, but certainly at heart. You are the one who had been there for me
all these years, and nothing is ever going to change that, okay?”
Apple looked so earnest that Cecil finally broke into a smile.
“ Okay.” Cecil answered simply, but the relief in her was obvious. She
smiled at Apple, and Apple returned the smile, as the two sisters sat in
Apple’s bedroom, bathed in the warm sunshine, each with different and complex
feelings, but nevertheless strenghthened by the knowledge that they would be
sisters forever…

Apple kissed Mrs Cheung on her cheeks.
“ Don’t worry Mom, I would be back as soon as I can.”
“ Okay, just take care of yourself.” Mrs Cheung said in a trembling voice,
her eyes filled with tears.
“ Apple, you must come back, this… this is your home.”
“ Don’t be silly, now that Apple have found her real parents, how can you
still expect her to come back?” Mr Cheung said gruffly, though his own face
was also contorted with pain.
“No, this is my home, you are my parents, the people who raised me, who cared
for me, who loved me. I would be back.” And with that, Apple hugged Mrs Cheung
so fiercely that Mrs Chueng finally felt assured. Mr Cheung said nothing, but
his eyes were silently thanking Apple, thanking her for… everything.

Hours later, Apple was sitting on the plane, on her way to Hong Kong. Her heart
was heavy, burdened with things that she shouldn’t have experienced at such a
tender age. Life, afterall, was unfair. Yet Apple felt a strange sense of relief
and freedom, she could finally find out the mystery behind her birth, finally
end the thoughts that had been tormenting her ever since that day when she found
out that Mr and Mrs Cheung were not her real parents…once and for all, beause
the truth, shall set her free.

Alec sat in the restaurant, listening to April’s gay chattering. Utterly bored
he was, he stared into space, into something that only he could see. Unknown to
him, miles away, a girl was slowly heading towards him, a girl who was going to
come into his life, the girl who would change everything…
Nevertheless, he had to do this, it was his job, his responsibility. The Tian Shen concentrated every whim of him onto the Earth Scope, and the two humans in it moverd nearer…again…

“ What??”
“ You heard me, I say I want to breakup temporarily.” April said in a soft
voice. Her face was contorted with pain, though that pain somehow did not quite
reach her eyes.
“ What do you mean, breakup temporarily…?”
“ Haven’t you been listening? I said that my boss wants me to go Canada to
further my career, he said it would be good for me this way. But I would have to
be gone for 2 to 3 yrs. But we would still keep in contact, shan’t we?”
April’s huge eyes implored.
“ Good for you? But what about what’s good for us?”
“ Well….umm… we could still meet after two years, or maybe less, but this
is the one and only chance for me. You always know how much I want to have a
good career.. pretty please…?” And she engaged Alec into a huge hug, though
it seemed, again, that it was void of feelings.
“ Okay. Just don’t forget that poor old me is still here when you come back
down to Earth, would you?” Alec’s mind was too exhausted to carry on
arguing, but he was hurt all the same, devastated, in fact, but he really want
April to search for what’s best for her, and in doing that, to be happy. But a
nagging thought was at the back of his mind, though he tried to push it away, it
seemed to be lodged there in his mind, firmly…
“ You’re free….. you’re free……”
It was still there. The thought was still there.

Apple nervously rang the doorbell, waiting for the door to open, waiting for the very last barrier that separates her and her real parents to be broken down. She fidgeted and rang the dooorbell again. She hoped that they would be in…… she wondered how they would react when they see her…… ummm, probably mistook her for April, as they didn’t know she would be arriving. She had meant it to be a surprise visit. The doorbell echoed throughout the house. Still nobody came. Sighing, Apple turned away when suddenly, the door opened…

Mrs Zhao’s voice registered shock. “ What was her daughter doing here?”
“ April, why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be in Canada? What’s the matter? Did something happen?”
Apple’s heart sank. Her sole purpose in coming to hk was actually to look for her twin, the one and only person who looked exactly like her on Earth. Honestly, she didn’t really come for her birth parents, why would she, when she had the two dearest people who had fed her and clothed her and rendered her love as if she was one of their own? No, she didn’t come for Mr and Mrs Zhao…… she had come.. for April.
But April was in Canada.
Taking a deep breadth, Apple explained.
“ Umm… I’m sorry, but you’re mistaken. I’m not April. I’m… Apple, April’s twin sister, the baby you left on the doorsteps of the Cheungs twenty one years ago.”
Even as she spoke, she felt anger bubbling up within her. The words that came
out of her own mouth stung her, pained her, hurt her. “ …the baby you
left… twenty year ago.”
She was wrong to think that in coming here, she could resolve everything. No,
the feeling of rejection would always be there.
Mrs Zhao’s eyes widened, and she stared at Apple in silence for a few
minutes. But the few minutes was like eternity.
Quietly, a drop of tear made its way down Mrs Zhao’s cheek.
Apple just stood there….stood there.

Apple sat down exhaustedly onto the large bed and looked around. It was a beautiful room, one that bring with it feelings of peacefulness and serene. It was April’s room.
The room was tastefully done up in soft colours of blue and cream. The soft lace curtains were slightly parted to reveal a clear pool at the foot of the house, and warm beams of sunlight shone into the room, adding vibrance and life to it. A white desk was placed underneath the window, decorated and made beautiful by soft toys, photo frames and dozens of little intricate ornaments. It was a sight to behold…the lone figure of a girl sitting on a bed with her back facing the door, her hair slightly blown back by the gentle wind that carressed her cheek, Yet the sadness in the girl’s eyes could chill anyone’s heart. Anyone’s.
She couldn’t deny it. She was jealous, jealous of her very own twin. Wild
thoughts, selfish thoughts, tormented her mind.
“Why…. Why did you have to give me away? Why is it me, and not April? We are
both your daughters… why did you choose me? Don’t you love me anymore?”
And looking at the photos of April did not help. Pictures of her with Mr and Mrs Zhao. Dozens of them around. They looked the perfect picture of a role model family, but in this picture, there was no place, and would never have any place, for Apple. She didn’t belong here, not now, not ever. There were also pictures of April with a guy, a cute guy, a sunny guy. She examined those pair of warm brown eyes of his carefully, and Apple felt something tugging at her heart. Footsteps sounded, and Apple hurriedly placed the photo back into it’s original little corner.
Apple opened the door. It was Mrs Zhao.
“Umm Apple, just came up here to see if you lack anything.”
And she settled herself on the bed, with no intention of leaving.
“ Oh no, Mrs Zhao,” Apple saw her winced, but she continued on mercilessly,” I’m fine. Everything I need is here. Umm… if you don’t mind, I’m going out to take a walk.”
“ But it’s so dark outside, it’s almost midnight…”
“ Oh no, it’s really okay. I’m used to it already. See you later!” And
with a cheerful wave, Apple got out of the house. She didn’t understand why
she had done that just now. Pushing her own mother away. But if Mrs Zhao think
that by just having a motherly chat with her for a few minutes could make up for
what she done, then she was wrong. She was seriously worng. Nothing, absoulately
nothing, can make that up. The look on her birth mother’s face when she called
her Mrs Zhao was still clearly imprinted in her mind. She obviously wants Apple
back now that she’s wealthy, but no that was impossible.
Maybe that‘s her revenge. Revenge to Mrs Zhao for abandoning her.
However it was different with April. April is her twin, and even though they haven’t meet yet, she could already feel the bond between them. “ We’re going to be great friends.” And wih that thought, her sunny, kind and cheerful character was back in place. She had parents who love her and waiting for her back as USA, she even had a twin, what more could she ask for?
Strolling, she arrived at the beach.

Loud rock music was blaring from the speakers. The bar stung of alcohol and
sweaty body odour.
Alec sat moodily at the bar counter, drowning glass after glass of whiskey.
“ For god’s sake stop drinking Alec!!”
Alec’s best friend Nicky’s voice cut in through the hazy cloud forming in
Alec’s mind.
“ I don’t get you at all, Alec. You know you don’t really love her, so why
are tyou hurting yourself like this. Face it Alec, you are just afraid to admit
to yourself that this thing going on between you and April is not true. You
don’t love her, at least not like her boyfriend, more like her brother.
Don’t you understand? She’s left, and it’s time to let go.”
“ No, I love her, I love her!! Don’t mind my business. Go away and stop
disturbing me.” Alec growled.
“ If I don’t care about you I would, but Alec, I do care. Wake up, and you
would discover that there’s a whole new world out there. Stop tormenting
yourself like this!”
“ Just leave me alone Nicky. Please. I can’t cope with all this right now.
I’m going to the beach to take a walk. Don’t come.”
And with that Alec left, leaving Nicky shaking his head and sighing helplessly.
“ The fool…”

The night air was surprisingly warm, and the moon was reflected on the clear
water surface, bright and round. The crickets were chirping away merrily,
oblivious to Alec’s dark mood.
Suddenly Alec saw a figure walking towards him. She did not see him, as her head
was bent. The thin figure of a girl walking by the beach, with her hair flying
wildly behind her. The girl looked familiar… she was….
Apple could sense someone looking at her. She lifted up her head and found herself staring at a familiar pair of warm chocolate brown eyes. Now, where did she see that pair of eyes before?

And so Ke er watched sadly, as the two star-crossed lovers lifted their heads
and stared at each other. Their eyes locked, her big expressive ones, with his
brown warm ones….
They finally met. Fate finally let them meet.
If only….
"April!" he shouted, his voice lingering in the warm night air, and
the next thing Apple knew, she was in his arms. Unconciously, she found herself
hugging him back, wrapping her arms around his neck, laying her exhausted head
onto his broad shoulders. She breathed deeply, taking in the scent of him...the
musty manly scent, a smell mixed with his aftershafe yet reeked of
alcohol...that special scent wich belong to him and him only. He smelled nice,
and leaning against his strong body, Apple felt dizzy, and there was a tugging
at her heart..a feeling that could not be named. Suddenly her whole world began
spinning as Alec bent his head and kissed her, ever so gently, on her dry lips.
She felt a warmth spreading over her, and she was lost, lost in the waves of an
emotion, an emotion that even she herself knew not of.
" April..I miss you so much." Alec whispered in her ear, his breadth
tickling her earlobe.
And then the truth registered...everything made sense now..the familiarty of
this mysterious man, his sudden and unexpected hug...so he was..April's
boyfriend. Alec. Yup, Alec was his name. She rememebred seeing it at the back of
the picture on April's table. 'Alec and April', it had said. She was suddenly
jealous, engulfed in the flames of this feeling of jealosuy, a feeling that she
had never once before experience, a feeling that frightened her, yet angered
her. "Why..why did he have to be April's boyfriend? Why did April always
have the best of everything..her parents, her beautiful room, and now...him.
This young man whom she has met now for the first time, yet touched her, deep to
her very core. She knew in her heart that these feelings of jealousy were
dangerous, they were going to destroy everything and everyone that she had ever
loved, ever cared for..but she didn't care. She couldn't control herself, in her
mind a scene was flashing, over and over again. tormenting her ever since she
heard from her mom that she was adopted, and she learned of her background. From
that second onwards it was destined that she would never be peaceful again,
unless..she come to terms with herself.
" You were left on the doorstep, left there by your mother, your very own
mother. "You were left in the doorstep, left there by you mother, your very
own mother... your very own mother... very own..very own mother..very own
mother.."
Looking up at Alec, and seeing the love in his eyes, she knew what she was goig
to do. Revenge..revenge on her parents, on April, though in her heart, in her
deepest heart of hearts she knew that it was not April's fault, nothing to do
with April. Nevertheless, she opened her mouth to speak..her vocie flowing out
in certain and confident tones, so much so that even she herself was almost
fooled. Almost, but not quite.
"Alec, yes, I'm back. I love you, and now I'm back. It's me..April."
And the word "April" seemed to echo.."April".."April".

"April Zhao! How dare you!" Alec shouted laughinly, chasing April with
a cupful of water in his hands. He splashed the water into her face, and
"splat", "April"'s face was wet. She shreiked and turned
around, swithching her role as the prey into the predator."Alec Su You Peng!!!
Look what you've done! Now my face and hair is all wet!"
"Ha! That is what you get for splashing water onto me!"
"But that was unintentional!"
"Do I look like I care?" Alec shouted back, his eyes dancing with
amusement.
"Let's see if u will care now. After I'm done with you, you'd regret ever
messing with me." "April" said threatening, her large expressive
eyes narrowing dangerously so that she appeared strict and fierce, tough her
heart was actually laughing, singing, rejoicing.
"Uh-oh, hey look here April, I'm sorry for pouring water on you, it was
just for fun, come on, don't take it too...OW! APRIL ZHAO!"
Before Alec could even finish his sentence, he felt himself being pushed into
the sea by "April". Completely caught off guard, he drank in a full
mouth of sea water, choking and sputtering, with "April" standing
there on the beach, laughing and pointing at his dismayed and shocked face.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning. The sun was up early, and the fluffy whie
clouds in the azure blue sky only served to bring out the majestic nature of the
sun. Birds chirped, fragrance from flowers in full bloom and the refreshng smell
of the morning dew was wafting around, lingering in the atmosphere. A perfect
time to visit the beach, and that was exactly what "April" and Alec
did, coming here as early as 8a.m., with a mat lay out on the sandy shore,
filled with all kinds of delicious food ready to be comsumed later. Then they
had talked, chattered about everything under the sun, but through this all,
"April" was very cautious, as she had to keep remind herself that she
is April, not Apple. From browsing through April's stuff at home that night, and
from listening to Mrs Zhao talk about her, she has already mastered all the
facts and characteristiocs of April. This was a secret not meant to be exposed,
and she had to be careful in her seek for revenge, her final goal being to steal
Alec away from April. But through it all, she kept telling herself, "You
don't love him, you can't love him...love would make people muddle-headed, and
then you would let off your guard. No, never ever fall in love with Alec Su. He
is the boyfriend, of the enemy. She felt surprised and shocked, even disgusted
at herself, for thinking such negative thoughts of her sister..no, not sisters,
even closer thatn that...her..twin. Wasn't her sole purpose in coming to hong
kong to find her twin, to make friends with her, to build up the bond that was
supposed to be there, yet lost due to the helpless situation, and to let her
know that somewhere on Earth, there was someone who looked exactly like her, who
cared for her, who loved her, despite all that has happened? What has come out
of all these resoulutions now? The crave for revenge, the hatred and jealousy of
the person who was supposed to be closest to her heart. Lying in April's
four-poster bed that night, with the warm filtering moon beams shining on her,
she had done some thinking, but the tiredness and the emotions of the day has
taken it's toll on her, and soon, she fell asleep to the uneven rhythem of her
own thinking. After many hours of soul-searching she had still not reached an
decision. But in the bright and cheery morning when she saw Alec standign
cheerfully at her door all her attempts to forgive and forget flew away. She did
not why she had such big reactions whenever she saw Alec, or why there was the
sudden intensified jealousy when Alec so much as look at her. She don't
understand it, but perhaps the one thing that caused her to be jealous of April
most was Alec. Thoguh she don't understand why, but she certainly can't deny it.
Talking with Alec was a pleasure, he looked at things foir much the same angle
as her, and they had lots in common. Looking into Alec's eyes all the unjust
ways of the world and the harshness and cruelty of reality seemed to fade into
nothingness as a warm peaceful feeling took over her heart. Half listening to
him chat, she observed him carefully, his chiseled good looks that never failed
to make him charming and appealing to people from the opposite side, his cute
gestures, and the lopsided smile that was always hanging on the corners of his
mouth. His eyes were not large like hers, yet they were expressive and emotional
ones, he was a pure and naive boy, unwise with the ways of the love, no secrets
to be hidden, what he feels forever shining frankly through that pair of windows
of his soul. Occasionally they would laspe into moments of silence, but it was a
comfortable one, a silence that promised everything, the love, the care, the
feelings. "No, I must not fall in love with him, it would only bring me
more hurt, more bitterness. After all, the woman he loves is April, not
me." But despite these constant reminders, Apple found herself falling in
love, as each day passes on, for this man, this kind-hearted man, whose heart
was occupied by another, her very own twin...

They had yet again went into those temporary moments of silence, this was not
surprising, he would often find nothing to say when he is with April. But this
was different, though they were not talking, but he actually felt completely at
ease, this silence that filled the atmosphere was like a silent messenger,
telling him the depts of love that "April" felt for him, and vice
versa. Ever since "April" came back with her reason that she missed
him too much to go to Canada, he felt like she was a changed person. Now
whenever he saw her his eyes would light up, and that feeling that came with
it..it was undescribable...a ridiculously happy feeling, as if only with her
would he ever be complete. Gone were those brotherly affections he once felt for
April, and in its place was the strong passions that tugged continuosly at his
heart. He had suddenly became possesive, he couldn't stand it if he saw her
chattering and laughing with other men. And the turbulence of feelings, the
feelings of lost when she was not there, the feelings of lonliness, terribel
loneliness...he realised that he was falling in love with her as every second of
the day passess...And "April", she was a completely changed person,
the new her was bright and cheerful, bubbly and wild, yet she was amazingly
understanding and gentle when it came to serious things...not like the old
April, the old one was gentle throughout, but she was also demanding and
unreasonalbe...and sometimes Alec always experience the feeling that she was not
being entirely true with him...there were no mutual trust in this relationship
of theirs. But now that April has changed dramatically, he was bewildered, yes,
but he knew that he liked this new one, lots and lots more...so.. these were the
feeling of love that the movies were talking about...indeed, they were not
lieing, and as Alec looked at "April" who was cuddled snugly in his
