Whisper, Star, and Flame
The Social Butterfly's Wings

by Kali

Part One: Glitter Girl

I watch my sister stare into the mirror
She smears makeup over her face
Hiding it from the world, turning it into something else
Donning a cosmetic mask
I watch her dress in the latest fashion
A tiny tank-top, hip hugger jeans
Tying the trendy laces of her all-too trendy shoes
Pulling on such a fashionable jacket
I watch her do her hair
Bright colours, pink and orange and blue
Stain her ponytail for now, forever
Bleached, dyed, curled, frizzed
Barrettes, braids, ponytails
An endless round of hair, hair, hair, hair!
I watch her put on jewelry
Three piercings in her ears
Little moons and suns and stars
And butterflies dangle from her neck
Thick plastic anklet
Toe rings, earrings, finger rings too
Necklaces, bracelets, everything under the sun
I watch her pack her bag
She brings a CD player, with all the latest songs playing
She brings a notebook, bright and red and covered in doodles
She brings a pen, feathery, purple, fluffy and - cute.
She brings a tube of glitter, yellow glitter, body glitter
She brings the world of fashion, style, trendiness
She brings her wings
The social butterfly’s wings
As the social butterfly prepares for the day.

Part Two: Chrysalis of Light

I wonder why she goes through this daily ritual
The cosmetic mask, the trendy clothes, the bright hair, the tiny jewels, the glittering pack
All to decorate her wings
To make them seem brighter, lighter
More full of colour and joy
She wraps herself up in a chrysalis of light
I wonder why she even bothers
She hides behind her sparkling wings
Hides behind them so no one sees her face
Her soul, her heart, her mind, her self
What they want to see is what she shows them
A butterfly beautiful
Fast-living, fast-dying, speed and colour and light
I know my sister
She’s sweet, kind-hearted, friendly and fun
She wasn’t born to wear so much makeup
She wasn’t born to wear such trendy clothes
She wasn’t born for the life of a glitter girl
She wasn’t born to be a butterfly
So why does she wear her wings
Hide herself and her soul
Try to make the wrong people love the wrong her?
