    Happier, sexier Janet Jackson gives a knockout performance

    Janet Jackson pumps up the crowd at KeyArena last night with a performance and style that are the diva's own.

    Meet the new Janet Jackson. There she was onstage at KeyArena last night, "shaking that thing like you never did see," as she sings on the title track to her latest album, "All For You." The All For You World Tour kicked off in Portland on Saturday and made its second stop in Seattle.

    Jackson, 35, has changed since we saw her last during 1998's critically acclaimed The Velvet Rope Tour. That album was a dark, deeply personal journey born from a depressing period in the pop singer's life. She's freer now, happier, and it shows. Just look at her on the cover to "All For You": sprawled on her side, wearing nothing but a swath of white fur and a wide smile. That Janet Jackson - wearing slightly more in person, but not much - showed up at KeyArena yesterday to a packed house. And what a show it was.

    Last night's performance was a study in sensory overload. There was the seven-piece band, the troupe of buff dancers, the stark, futuristic set (designed by Mark Fisher, whose résumé includes sets for Pink Floyd's The Wall, U2's Popmart and the Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon tours). And then there was Ms. Jackson herself, who, after recently divorcing husband Rene Elizondo, appears to be experiencing the kind of rebirth Mariah Carey went through after splitting with Sony Records' Tommy Mottola.

    Jackson is dating now, and the songs on "All For You" reflect that: They're playful, sassy and seductive. The upbeat tempos often belie the songs' steamy lyrics - in the bouncy "All For You," she sings repeatedly, "Got a nice package all right / Guess I'm gonna have to ride it tonight."

    The show veered from over-the-top theatrics to no-frills singing, combining the old with the new as Jackson performed hits from her seven-album, 19-year career. The costumes, lighting and mood changed as rapidly as the music: One rather eerie number had Jackson dressed in black leather and surrounded by fog with dancers who looked like the Phantom of the Opera crossed with something out of the Jennifer Lopez film, "The Cell."

    For another segment, she strapped down an audience member and climbed on top clad as a dominatrix. But one of the best numbers was a medley of ballads - including "Come Back To Me," "Let's Wait Awhile" and "Again" - sung beautifully by Jackson from a stool centerstage as she hugged a teddy bear and giggled between songs.

    Jackson's dance-heavy, visual live performances - which started with her debut Rhythm Nation Tour more than a decade ago - have paved the way for the new generation of pop. Teen pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, among others, have credited Jackson as an influence. Jackson's show, however, proved there's nothing like the real thing.
