16/09/01 Michael Jackson To Help Victims With What More Can I Give Fund Raising Effort!

Michael Jackson is leading a fund raising effort to help raise $50 million to benefit survivors and families of victims of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., that claimed the lives of hundreds of people, with over 5000 people reported missing.

Jackson's spokesperson, Howard Rubenstein, announced in a statement that Jackson plans to record a new song, titled "What More Can I Give," along with the involvement of many fellow musicians. Those stars already committed to the effort are Destiny's Child, Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys, Mya, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync, with others lining up to be part of this charitable effort.

Jackson said, "I believe in my heart that the music community will come together as one and rally to the aid of thousands of innocent victims. There is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now and through this effort each one of us can play an immediate role in helping comfort so many people. We have demonstrated time and again that music can touch our souls. It is time we used that power to help us begin the process of healing immediately."

Jackson is currently working on "What More Can I Give." He will personally produce the song, and record it with other artists in two versions, English and Spanish. "What More Can I Give" will be released as soon as possible. The proceeds from the song's distribution will go to a relief fund for the victims' families and survivors.

Jackson has been actively involved in charitable activities throughout his life, including the 1985 "We Are the World: USA for Africa" effort, which raised $65 million to aid famine victims in Africa. He co-wrote the song "We Are the World" and was one of the many performers that participated in its recording. In 1999, Jackson organized two charitable concerts 'Michael Jackson & Friends' in Germany and Korea, which raised $3.3 million for charity.

09/09/01 Michael Jackson Celebrates 30 Years As A Solo Artist With A Tribute Concert

Michael Jackson celebrated his 30 years as a solo artist on Friday, September 7, 2001 with the help of a long list of stars and a sellout crowd that filled the Madison Square garden for the "Michael Jackson: The Solo Years, 30th Anniversary Celebration" tribute concert.

When Michael Jackson arrived to the event and was being escorted to his seat, he was greeted by deafening cheers from the audience. He was seated next to his parents, Elizabeth Taylor, and Macaulay Culkin to watch the first part of the concert, as various stars performed their renditions of Michael Jacksonclassics.

The show began with Usher, Mya, and Whitney Houston performing "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'". They received the first of many standing ovations that could be heard throughout the event. 13-year-old country singer Billy Gilman performed "Ben". Marc Anthony did a rendition of "She's Out of My Life". Gloria Estefan and James Ingram teamed up for a beautiful duet of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." A medley of songs from the movie "The Wiz" was performed by Jill Scott as the Scarecrow, Al Jarreau as the Tin Man, Deborah Cox as the Cowardly Lion, and Monica as Dorothy - all dressed in character costumes. Liza Minnelli sang "You Are Not Alone," backed by a gospel choir. Destiny's Child performed their own hit "Bootylicious" but paid homage to Jackson with white gloves and fedora hats. Other superstars that performed, appeared, or attended included Ray Charles and Cassandra Wilson, Shaggy, Gladys Knight, Eminem, Yoko Ono, Alicia Keys, Shaquille O'Neal, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Tucker, Susan Sarandon, Janet Leigh, and many others. Marlon Brando told the audience that Jackson will be donating money to build a children's hospital in Florida.

Michael Jackson took the stage in the second part of the show, performing a medley of Jackson 5 hits including "ABC, "I Want You Back," and "I'll Be There," together with his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, and Randy. This marked the first occasion for the Jacksons to perform together since their 1984 Victory tour. 'NSync joined the Jacksons in a performance of "Dancing Machine". Billboard magazine described Michael Jackson's stage presence as "formidable" and added that Jackson "..dazzled the audience with each shimmy and yelp. The highlight was the group's performance of 'I'll Be There,' which showcased Jackson's soulful interpretation of the classic." Finally, it was time for Michael Jackson to perform hits from his solo career. He was first joined by Britney Spears in a rendition of "The Way You Make Me Feel." Finally, alone on stage, he delighted the audience with the performance of his legendary song "Billie Jean." Then came of "Beat It" and "Black or White," accompanied by Slash playing the guitar. As promised, Jackson included material from his new album "Invincible," performing the first single "You Rock My World."

The tribute concert, which lasted past midnight, came to a close with an all-star cast singing "We Are The World," led by Quincy Jones. Michael Jackson told the crowd, "I want to thank everyone who came tonight. It was an incredible experience. I love you all. Thank you so much." Following the concert, a post-party was held at New York's Tavern on the Green restaurant. The party's theme was the Wizard of Oz and featured arcade games, stilt walkers, and Munchkins passing out candy. Michael Jackson arrived there at about 1:30 AM. The second of the two tribute concerts will take place at the Madison Square Garden on Monday, September 10, 2001. CBS will air an edited version of the concerts in a television special that will air sometime this fall.
