Roberto Velazquez Alomar was born February 5, 1968 in the small town of Ponce, Puerto Rico. He is the son of former major leaguer Sandy Alomar Sr. and is the brother of current major leaguer catcher for the Chicago White Sox, Sandy Alomar Jr. Roberto got his first break in 1985, when he signed with the San Diego Padres. He played short stop in the minor leagues until he was called up for the first time in 1988, when he switched over to second base for the Padres. He played there until he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991 as a good hitter and mediocre fielder. However, Alomar made a dramatic turnaround in that department. Leading the league in errors at second base with seventeen in 1990, Alomar only made five in 1992 with the blue jays and went a Major League Record 105 games without making an error. He was an integral part of championship teams in Toronto during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. Those teams also included all stars Joe Carter, Ricky Henderson and John Olerud. He then signed with the Baltimore Orioles and had two of his most sucessful seasons there. In 1998, Roberto signed with the Cleveland Indians in order to play with his brother, Sandy Alomar. He had more sucessful seasons there, including 200 where he hit 20 HRs and had over 100 RBIs. Sandy Alomar then signed with the Chicago White Sox in 2000. Roberto Alomar was traded to the New York Mets in 2002 along with Mike Bascik and a minor league first baseman in exchange for Matt Lawton, Jerrod Riggan, Billy Traber and another minor leaguer. |
