It's simply amazing that Merle was able to gather members of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys to produce this superb recording. There a few surviving members that were absent of course, namely Bob Wills himself. Wills was no longer performing but would be an honorary 'host' for two other of Merle's projects. The first was what is known as "Bob Wills The Lost Album". It would remain unissued until 2005 when The Bear Family© produced the 14 disc box set "Faded Love 1947-1973". This mega rare recording was done at Merle & Bonnie's new home in Bakersfield, California in 1970. I'm guessing "The Lost Album" was the inspiration for the Capitol Records© studio album "My Salute To Bob Wills". Merle and The Strangers would have one more chance to perform with Wills on Bob's 1973 album entitled "For The Last Time, Bob Wills And His Texas Playboys". "My Salute" is one of those recordings you can place on repeat and go about your day! Each and every track is superbly performed, recorded and mixed making the listening experience almost surreal. Merle would incorporate the great electric mandolin of Tiny Moore into his live shows for another decade giving even more depth to The Strangers. The opinions above are solely those of Sound_man73. If you're like me you'll collect the music either way :) Be sure to check out Merle Haggard's Official Site! |
