This would be the last album for a while in which Hag would be pulled in two directions at the same time. Meaning, "do I compose tear-jerker type standards or just give the world my brutal honesty in song?". Merle's rendition of "Soldier's Last Letter" introduces us to the more personal side of Merle's personality. The track "Jesus, Take A Hold" is a masterpiece that never got much airplay. This song is timeless in my opinion as we all think the era we live in holds the worst times we've seen. "The Farmer's Daughter" would also go on to be another Haggard classic. We would have to wait only a few more months for the Merle Haggard we all know and admire. The opinions above are solely those of Sound_man73. If you're like me you'll collect the music either way :) Be sure to check out Merle Haggard's Official Site! |
