"I Won't Give Up My Train" written by Merle's pianist Mark Yeary was originally recorded for Hag's 1976 album "My Love Affair With Trains". The song never got much airplay from that album because of poor marketing. The track was released as a 'bonus track' by BGO (Beat Goes On) in 2000 for their reissue of "Big City". Merle would record this same song again for his upcoming album "Going Where The Lonely Go". This time it would make the final cut and get the exposure it deserved all along. If you've never heard the track you're missing out. It's one of the finest songs ever written! This album also marks the era where Merle longs for the days of old. It's no secret that Haggard and his then wife Leona Williams had a very toxic relationship. He says in his 1999 "My House Of Memories" book with Tom Carter: "I'll never get involved with anyone again just to further their career...I won't mention your name, but I want to thank you for leaving me, I mean it, it was the best thing that ever happened to me". Even with the above statement, Merle's creativity was at an all time high during this period penning some of the most heartfelt songs of his career. "My Favorite Memory" was inspired by Williams, but Merle would later state in the book: "My Favorite Memory was written about one of the worst memories I ever had". I suppose misery loves company?
