Leona was a fine writer and backing vocalist. However, her lead vocals leave something to be desired. Her style reminds me of every gal I ever heard sing in a dark dingy bar somewhere. You know they type? Someone says "damn gal, you can really sing"---(said with an alterior motive in mind of course). With that said I doubt you or I would have ever heard the name Leona Williams with the association to Merle Haggard. It's obvious that Merle knew later, and possibly even during the present time that Williams was using his name to launch her career. Merle even stated in his book My House Of Memories: "I won't mention your name, but I want to thank you for leaving me, I mean it, it was the best thing that ever happened to me" He would later say: "I will never get involved with someone to further their music career" . Merle's voice is absolutely perfect through out this recording yet I never listen to this album except for the song "Sally Let Your Bangs Hang Down". Please note that there was a reissue of "Heart To Heart" entitled "Old Loves Never Die". The first 10 tracks are identical to the studio release from 1983. Merle is not affiliated in any way with the remaining 18 tracks. It is considered a "Special Market Release". Be sure to check out Merle Haggard's Official Site! |
