I rarely listen to this one even though this was one of Merle's most critically acclaimed albums. The first 7 tracks are absolute perfection. The last 3 tracks just feel totally out of place here. Track #8, "Thank Heaven For Little Girls", seems an inappropriate choice coming from a 47 year old Country Music outlaw. I'm sure it wasn't intended this way, but the track just feels creepy :) He then follows with "To All The Girls I've Loved Before", a song in which Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias released earlier in the year. So these two tracks in succession seems a bit strange to me. To top if off Merle 'yodels' on the next track "You Nearly Lose Your Mind". Maybe they should have done a focus group before release saying something like: "Hey guys, we're gonna depress the hell out of them for 20 minutes, then sing this song about watching how little girls grow up to become women, don't worry, it's an old standard, then we'll sing about all the girls we've loved before...oh, and then were gonna yodel to an Ernest Tubb tune...sound good?". :) At any rate, the first 7 tracks are worth the buy.
