Even though this album reached #4 on the charts in 1986, it's rarely heard these days. It's obvious from the material included here that Merle felt he was 'washed-up' and very little else to offer as an artist. If you've heard this album in the past and labeled it too depressing, then I implore you to give it a second listen.
Merle's brutal honesty here is absolutely unheard nowadays. There isn't one single artist I can think of that has poured themselves out like Merle has within the grooves of "Out Among The Stars".
Haggard writes 6 of the 11 tracks here. Each one deals with an aging performer wondering what in hell happened to their life and whether it's worth living any longer. Again this type of honesty is mega-rare and I applaud Merle for allowing us to share his strife and struggle.
Get this any way you can and treasure it as I do. :)
