Stephen news 18/11 (Boyzoneday)Boyzone star kicks off Christmas season in style Nov 18 2002 Daily Post THOUSANDS of fans turned out to see Boyzone star Stephen Gately switch on Liverpool's Christmas lights last night. A giant snow machine ensured Merseysiders who braved the cold were treated to an early white Christmas in a carnival atmosphere. The fireworks display culminated in the Wellington column monument transformed into a sparkling giant silver Christmas tree. Children were hoisted on their dads' shoulders and waved dazzling glowsticks and flags, while others clung to street lights to get a better view of the proceedings. Gately, starring in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat at the Empire Theatre, flicked the switch on 17,000 festive light bulbs outside St George's Hall. To screams and cheers from fans he then performed Joseph hits Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door to the delight of the 10,000 strong crowd which packed the surrounding roads and paths. The two-hour concert featured a choir of 200 talented Mersey-side children singing Liverpool Bids Farewell - the song commissioned for the the Round the World Clipper Race, which started in Liverpool last month. Anfield gospel choir Love and Joy performed a special version of You'll Never Walk Alone while rhythm and blues band Fat Cats opened proceedings.
