ARCHIVE EDITOR'S NOTE --- As recounted by Niki in Part Three of her North American Adventure, she and Production Manager Catherine Skinner found themselves - upon arrival for the 2002 Victoria Fringe Festival in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on Vancouver Island - staying with a billet a fair distance from the site of the Fringe and well off public-transit routes. Undeterred, Niki went looking for a set of convenient wheels and a sponsor for such. And very soon, Niki and Catherine were proving why they were "born to be wild"! In a wonderful show of support for Victoria’s Fringe Festival, Cycle BC Rentals of Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada have sponsored UK solo performer Niki McCretton. Niki has travelled to Victoria from England with her highly-acclaimed, one-woman show, Worm-Hole. The venture has entailed Niki, and stage manager Catherine Skinner, driving their set and props from Thunder Bay, Ontario across the west stopping at Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Edmonton, Victoria, and then on to Vancouver and finally Seattle. These two young women have made the journey by renting a U-Haul truck between festivals, thus re-inventing the Thelma & Louise road-trip experience!
Cycle BC Rentals has provided transport in the form of a motorcycle to enable Niki and Catherine to get around both Victoria and Vancouver during the Fringe, as their accommodation is too far out of town to be able to access public transport. Niki said, “I am thrilled at the support of Cycle BC. This generosity enables us, not only to be able to get to our performances, but also to see the beauty of the area. In previous cities, we have had to walk to our shows, carrying the costumes. The motorbike is fantastic. This is the kind of support that makes being away from home that little bit easier.”
Doug Turner, owner of Cycle BC Rentals, said, “We are happy to be a supporter of the arts in both Victoria and Vancouver, and wish the Fringe performers luck with their performances here”.
