Of the Nature of Flatland


Answer the following questions in your math notebook. You should be sure to use complete sentences. Also, please have a seperate section of your notebook set aside for the analysis of Flatland. Be prepared to discuss your answers on class when it is due!

1.) Why does the author say, "it is impossible that there should be anything of what you call a 'solid' kind" in Flatland?

2.) The author says, "nothing was visible, nor could be visible, to us, except straight lines". Perform the demonstration with the penny on the table that he suggests. Draw what you see at three levels; from above, gradually moving to eye level, and at eye level.

3.) For question 2, explain your points of view, why are they so different? Which is like flatland?

4.) If there were a light in Flatland, why would there be no shadows?

5.) In Flatland, what is an equilateral triangle? A line?

6.) Where does the author say we, the readers live?

7.) Why does the author call our land what he calls it?(From #6)

8.) What person is this book authored in? What are the benefits of this?
