Chapter Two

Of the Climate and Houses in Flatland


Answer the following questions in your math notebook. You should be sure to use complete sentences. Also, please have a seperate section of your notebook set aside for the analysis of Flatland. Be prepared to discuss your answers on class when it is due!

1.) Define the following words:

2.) The author says, "it is impossible to determine the North in the usual way". What is the usual way?

3.) When the author refers to a 'Law of Nature' that gives a constant attraction to the South, what Law is he referring to?

4.) Draw a small sketch of what you think Flatland would look like. Include; north, south, east, west, the rain, at least 1 house.

5.) Picture(mentally) how a woman traveling, because of the attraction to the south, can help determine the directions. Put this into words.

6.) In Flatland there are no windows, light comes equally to all places. Explain.

7.) Determining origins of light is absolutely prohibited. What does this tell you about their society? (This is during the Victorian Era)

8.) Angles of squares and triangles, when compared to those of petagons are referred to as being "much more pointed". In math terms, what does this mean?

9.) Regarding the different shapes and the doors of petagonal houses, explain how this would relate to "public safety".
