HI!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kim Marquez and I am a Sewing and Crafts teacher. I give semi-private and private lessons in sewing.* I will also be giving mini-craft classes on this webpage!

Contact Me!

Lessons are for children 8-17 years old and for adults.
I try not to enroll more than 5 students in a multiple lesson so that everyone gets 'personal' attention.
You must call to make arrangements to start lessons. You can reach me or my machine at: 831-637-5028.
If there is no answer, page me at: 831-665-9389.

Preparation

Since lessons will be held in private homes, where people live, it will be necessary to have the cooperation of the rest of the people living there as far as interruptions and distractions. It will be up to the students to get the most out of their lessons by having all the necessary materials and by being set-up and ready to sew when I arrive.

Here is a list of equipment each student will need for class:

(The students, not the teacher, supply their materials and equipment)
  • quilter's pins with large ball heads (long and thin are best)
  • pin holder(magnet or cushion)
  • hand sewing needles (sharps or "embroidery", asst. sizes)
  • fabric marking pen (water-soluble), or tracing paper and tracing wheel
  • hem gauge or small ruler
  • tape measure (cloth or vinyl)
  • seam ripper
  • sharp scissors** (dressmaker style, not haircutting or paper scissors)
  • some kind of box or container to keep your equipment in
  • Sewing Machine in good working order** (also include bobbins, accessories, needles, and instruction book for machine if available)

NOTE:

Since each student needs their own machine, it is not possible for two students to share a machine in the same class.
In addition to the above equipment, there will need to be a sturdy table of some sort, good lighting, a freestanding ironing board in good shape, and easy-to-get-to electrical plugs in the location where the lessons will be held.

NEW!

I have recently purchased an extra sewing machine that may be used by students that have no machine. The cost for the use of the machine will be $10 for 8 hours, in addition to your regular class tuition. Since there is only one extra machine, only one student per class may be assigned to it. The machine will be reserved for that student and will last for the duration of their lessons. It will not be available to keep at your house.

First Lesson

For your first 2 hours we will generally go over the use of the machine, threading, the stitches, the equipment, and practice sewing. It is not necessary to have your pattern and fabric all picked out at that time, but if you do, that's great! I can measure you and help guide your selection if you are having difficulty choosing something. Beginners are encouraged to choose something simple to start on. In all the pattern books these types of patterns are labeled "quick and easy", "fast and easy", "make it tonight", etc. Look for patterns that don't have a lot of pieces or details.*** Cotton and cotton-blend woven and knit fabrics are best.(Do not buy knits if your sewing machine doesn't have a zigzag stitch)

Fabric Care

Fabrics should be pre-laundered if possible to avoid shrinkage after you have completed your garment. If you are planning to make something for someone else, we will need their body measurements. Each student works at their own level, so some may accomplish more than others may. The classes are not meant to be a competition.

Student Store

I will have with me a few basic items for purchase at my cost for those who may have forgotten or misplaced something. These will include markers, rippers, interfacing, elastic, and needles. It is recommended you have all items necessary for your lesson ahead of time.

* At this time I can only offer classes in English, but if you have a good interpreter, I would be happy to try it in any other language!
** If you need your scissors sharpened or your machined serviced, call me!
***For a list of Fabric Stores in our area where you can find patterns and fabric, just ask.
