THE WILDCARDS OF CAL STATE LONG BEACH

LONG BEACH ALUMNI TEAM - NIT 2002

Started like a an ordinary and inexperienced co-ed softball team back in the early 1990's. It was not too long ago that they started picking up a few experienced players and started slowly moving up in the Sportsfest rankings. During the mid 1990's, they have become one of the most dominant teams along with CSUN FASA Alumni, Oxnard College and Cal Poly Pomona. However they would always seem to come up 1 or 2 games short of a championship title against those big 3 teams of the mid 1990's. Not even a coin toss would help them out. It wasn't until 1999 they won their first Sportsfest title against El Camino College. Since then, they took the LMU Battle of the Imports softball title and in 2002, LB Alumni won their first NIT title.

Their most exciting championship title moment run was at NIT which I was on that team. This is where we lost all our round robin games (3). We even got beat really bad by the weaker teams. Basically it was the most embarassing losses I ever experienced. Fortunately, all the tourney teams qualified for the playoffs and we were fortunate that we made it with an 0-3 record. By qualifying for the playoffs with our bad record, it not only gave us a 2nd chance, but there was no pressure on us because none of the teams thought it would be possible. Most of the teams didn't we can beat them. Well it turned out they we upsetted every team in the tourney and wound up beating the 2002 Sportsfest Champs from Southwestern Pagka Alumni.

Wildcards: Don't know who are the Wildcards??? Well this the team that began as an Asian American co-ed softball team from Cal State Long Beach. Been playing for a long time in the Sportsfest and NIT tourneys as a co-ed team.

Now have form a men's E team mostly from LA, Orange County, San Diego and Oxnard last October (2002). With a somewhat newly formed team. We are pretty unpredictable. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But we give it a lot of effort and fly by the seat of our pants. Hence Wildcards. We are ready for the big challenge that comes our way!!
