Game Review
The Hesperia Christian Patriots opened the 2005-2006 basketball season with a 79-60 victory over the Cougars of Riverside Christian. The Patriots did it with some of the most balanced scoring in the last four years at HCS as every starter was in double figures. Junior Mike Maerzluft led all scorers with 17 points. He also had 8 rebounds. Junior Jonny Barton got his first double double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. HCS failed to put the Cougars away until the fourth quarter and they will have to improve in that arena.

The senior guard duo of Billy Hague and Zach Howard had impressive performances as they got 13 and 14 points respectively. They also were able to get 10 assists between them and 11 steals. They had a 10 to 3 assist to turnover ratio. Senior forward Mike Petersen had a solid night with 16 points and a phenomenal FG percentage of 67%.

The Patriots improved in every stat category over last year's game against Riverside Christian except for rebounds but they still had 33 rebounds in this game. Passing was all right but not as crisp and as accurate as it will have to be against faster teams than the Cougars. On the negative side, the team shot a dismal 43% from the charity line. However, if they keep up the very balanced scoring, the free throw shooting will not hurt them until the playoffs where it could become the kiss of death.

Hesperia Christian is now 1-0 and meets Victor Valley Christian in the opening round of the Hesperia Holiday Classic next Tuesday.

Game Preview
The 2005-2006 season opens tonight in Hesperia for Hesperia Christian and Riverside Christian. Hesperia Christian is coming off an outstanding year where they finished as sole Agape League Champions. Riverside Christian did not make playoffs last year after going to the second round the year before. Last year HCS won by a score of 66-47 and grabbed 38 rebounds. The Patriots are hoping to build on the success of the program last year. Still Coach Dobyns hopes to get answers to several questions about his squad. The Patriots will have to find about 70 points a game this year to pretty well guarantee wins each night. Summer league did not show where these 70 points were going to come from. Of course, a tightened up defense negates the need for 70 points. And the other nagging question is whether HCS can shoot free throws. So tonight's game with the Cougars of Riverside Christian is a perfect opportunity for Coach Dobyns and Coach Hamilton to assess their team's capabilities this year.
