Game Review
Hesperia Christian took on a scrappy but undermatched Victor Valley Christian in the opening round of the Hesperia Christian Holiday Classic and won 75-37. HCS is now 2-0 while Victor Valley Christian drops to 1-3. The Patriots took about a quarter to get warmed up winning the quarter only 18-12. But after that first quarter, HCS took control of the game and it was never in question.
Again the Patriots had extremely well-balanced scoring from all of their players. Senior Mike Petersen led all scorers with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Zach Howard had 12 points and 5 steals. Junior Mike Maerzluft added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior point guard Billy Hague was perfect from the charity line at 4 for 4 and had 7 steals. Jonny Barton led the team in steals with 8.
The second team got playing time and also supported the winning effort. Jordan Martinson came off the bench to put in 10 points, his career high. He also had 7 rebounds. Sadly he went 1/2 from the free throw line missing his first free throw of his 2 year varsity career. Josh Ellis and Tyler O'Brien contributed to the win with 5 and 3 points respectively. Freshman Jordan Vargas demonstrated some outstanding defense getting 5 steals and 3 assists.
Free throw shooting was a bright spot for HCS as they shot 71%, a big improvement over their last game. HCS proved excellent in the ball thievery with a phenomenal 36 steals. They shot 56% from three point range. On the negative side, they only had 32 rebounds against a substantially smaller team. The Royals often had position over the taller Patriots under the basket. HCS had a dismal 24 turnovers which is far more than a high ranked team should have. And they got only 14 assists.
HCS next plays Silver Valley on Friday night in the semifinals.
Game Preview
Tonight Hesperia Christian opens their HCS Holiday Classic against league rival Victor Valley Christian. HCS is now 1-0 after a victory over a scrappy Riverside Christian 79-60. The Royals are 1-2 after playing in their own tournament last week.
The Patriots had a well-balanced attack that will bid them well if they can continue in that vain. All starters were in double figures and Jonny Barton had the first double double of the season. They should be able to continue that against the Royals. A major problem last year that surfaced again against Riverside Christian was the lack of ability to put a team away early. It was not until middle of the fourth quarter that HCS finally put the game away.
The Royals have new coaches and have one of the smallest teams that they have fielded in over four years. No player is over 5' 11". They are fast but because of their size only get one shot per time down court. The Royals have not beaten the Patriots in well over six years and hope to get the upset this evening. This will be a good evening for HCS to practice their inside game and perfect it. They also should get a minimum of 40 rebounds tonight. Hopefully the first team will put this game away soon enough to give the second team some game experience.
