Game Review
In the HCS Holiday Classic semifinal match, Hesperia Christian faced its toughest opponent so far this season in the undefeated Silver Valley. The Patriots were able to pull out a 59-56 victory in an exciting thrilling match. The Patriots were led by junior Mike Maerzluft's 13 points, Junior Jonny Barton's 13 points and Senior Mike Petersen's first double double of this year, with 12 points and 11 rebounds. HCS' senior Zach Howard had 11 points and 8 crucial rebounds. The Trojans were led by Jemel Kyles who had 13 points, 9 of which were three pointers.

The game lead went back and forth in the first half with Silver Valley pulling ahead by 2 points as the first half ended. The Trojans came out in the second half charged to win this one and built up a 14 point lead with about five minutes left in the third quarter. HCS could not seem to be able to buy a basket. They were tentative and could not seem to defend against the much smaller Silver Valley. Finally the Patriots got out of their funk midway in the third quarter and closed the gap to three points. Solid defense by HCS in the fourth quarter allowed HCS to stay in the game and with less than a minute left they pulled ahead for good. Silver Valley's Jemel Kyles got off one last three point shot to tie against Jonny Barton's tight defense but it rimmed out.

The real highlight for the Patriots tonight was their heart and never-give up attitude which brought them back into the game after Silver Valley got what appeared to be an insurmountable lead of 14 points. HCS, for the third straight game had well-balanced scoring from its first team. The Patriot's three point shooting was atrocious making only 1 of 9 shots for 11%. Other than Howard and Maerzluft's perfect shooting from the free throw line, the rest of the team shot a mediocre 2 of 7 for 29%. Again they had a negative assist to turnover ratio. HCS is now 3-0 and will meet Arrowhead Christian for the championship Saturday night. Silver Valley now is 4-1 and meets Upland Christian for third place.
