Two things cost HCS the game. They shot perfect from the line but only got there 7 times. Both Mike Maerzluft and Mike Petersen should have gotten to the line at least 8 times a piece more than they did. But the refs just would not call the fouls as both Mikes went up to shoot under the basket. And Jonny Barton was fouled at least four times without any fouls being called. An interesting sidenote is that this ref also called the Arrowhead Christian game and will do the Hesperia game on Friday. The answer may be for HCS to go up to the basket even harder so that the fouls become even more obvious.
But despite the ref issue, HCS cost themselves the game by themselves with the 25 turnovers and only 7 assists. One of the things players at Division V should learn is that at Division I and II passing lanes are open for a lot less time than at Division V. Passes have to be crisper and a lot faster than normal. And the outside shooters just could not get open. Of course, very few picks were set which did not help the shooters to get open. The lack of shooting meant that HCS only got 39 points tonight, the second worst point output by an HCS team since 1999. Only a 32 point output against Sultana last year in this very tournament was worse.
Hesperia Christian will meet Norte Vista tomorrow at 4 pm and then Hesperia High on Friday at 7 pm.
