Game Review
Hesperia Christian beat California Lutheran of Wildomar tonight 61-44 in a game in which the C-Hawks could just not overcome a strong second quarter effort by the Patriots. HCS was lead by Billy Hague who had 15 points, 5 assists and 6 steals. Hague got great support from frosh Jordan Vargas. Vargas, in his first varsity start, got a career high 9 points and played some good defense. The Patriots still allowed the C-Hawk stars Aaron Stubalt and Robbie Willis to get 12 and 11 points respectively. Most of Stubalt's points were on drives to the basket. That issue will have to be fixed by the coaches. Mike Maerzluft and Zach Howard got in foul trouble early and that had an affect on their games. But the sign of a solid basketball team is the ability to still score and win when stars are off. And HCS did just that. Preston Lamarca got 7 points and 2 rebounds.Jordan Martinson had one of his best outings of the year with 7 points. Mike Petersen despite still feeling the effects of the flu was able to get 8 points.

HCS still had a -1 assist to turnover ratio with 14 turnovers and 13 assists. Free throw shooting is still not yet at playoff standards with the Patriots shooting a miserable 53%. Exceptions were Maerzluft (2-2), Martinson (2-2) and Howard (3-4). Three point shooting improved but that was because HCS only took 16 three pointers and made four of them. HCS' second quarter was outstanding as they won it 22-9, which established Patriot dominance for the game. HCS also dominated the boards because of the efforts of Petersen with seven rebounds and Jonny Barton who had nine rebounds.

HCS is now 5-4 and goes on Christmas break until next week when they open against Marin Academy from Northern California in the Valley Christian Holiday Tournament.

Game Preview
California Lutheran hosts Hesperia Christian. This is the first match between these two teams. California Lutheran is presently 3-2 with four games unreported. California Lutheran lost to Tarbut v Torah 60-44 and has beaten Joshua Springs 60-56 and beat Bloomington Christian last week 46-40. They average 45 points per game. In the games reported California Lutheran seems to surge in the second half, particularly the fourth quarter where they score an average 17 points. Opponents' stars seem to be able to get their points each game making California Lutheran's defense suspect.

Hesperia Christian is coming off a 2 game losing streak. These losses are against a Div I and Div II team. This game gives the Patriots a chance to get tuned up prior to entering the always tough Valley Christian Holiday Tournament next week. There is a lot to work on like free throw shooting (only Maerzluft and Ellis can shoot them), three point shooting (only Martinson makes them) and press break. HCS' average score per game has dropped to its lowest level since 1999 at 56 PPG. Hesperia Christian is presently 4-4.
