Game Review
In the battle for fourth place in the championship round of the Valley Christian Holiday Tournament, Hesperia Christian beat Providence of Burbank 56-51. HCS played their best game of the season, playing smart basketball in the final three minutes as the Pioneers fought to get back into the game. The Patriot defense was virtually flawless in this game as they kept Jon Martinez to only 13 when he normally scores 21 and also held Alex Jacke to 11,three points under his average.

Both Mike Petersen and Mike Maerzluft were slightly of their normal offensive game but both Jordan Vargas and Jordan Martinson made up the difference scoring 5 and 4 points above their averages. Zach Howard had a good offensive game with 12 points but continued with his turnover woes with six. The team shot a 66% from the freethrow line but only Maerzluft and Howard are really shooting well from the charity line at 100% and 71% respectively. Without those two, the team shot 55% from the free throw line. Petersen did a great job in grabbing 8 rebounds of the team's 30 rebounds.

HCS continues to have difficulty from the three point line. They shot a miserable 11%. At that rate, no one should even be taking threes. It is a long ways from when the Patriots were feared in Socal for being the best three point shooting team in Southern California. The Patriots again had 19 turnovers and only 10 assists. That has to be fixed prior to the playoffs. It will be important even next week against two tough fast opponents.

Hesperia Christian is now 8-5 and meets Brethren Christian next Tuesday in Hesperia.

Their main stars to be stopped are Jon Martinez and Alex Jacke who average 21 and 14 points respectively. This is the fifth year that Hesperia Christian has played in this tournament. In all four years HCS has won two games and lost two games each tournament. During this period HCS has played schools like Buckley twice, Brethren Christian, St Lawrence Academy (twice) and Grace Brethren.
