Game Review

"Hesperia Christian trails 54-52 with about 6 seconds left. HCS inbounds the ball under pressure. The ball is passed to Jordan Vargas in the far corner. He is double teamed by two Brethren Christian players. The clock is running out. Vargas shoots over them with only a second left. The buzzer sounds. And then miraculously the ball swishes through the net. HCS wins 55-54."

And now the game goes down in HCS history as does Jordan Vargas as one of several classic HCS wins. In the first quarter it did not look like Hesperia Christian would even be in the game by halftime. Brethren Christian came out playing like a tough top five Div IV team while HCS looked like a mismatched Div VA team. Brethren Christian showed speed and intensity, the likes which the Patriots have not seen this season. HCS scored only four points in the first quarter to the Warriors 11 points. The second quarter had HCS starting to play basketball, but they still lost to Brethren Christian 18-15.

The second half saw an energized Hesperia Christian which was beginning to play to their potential but by the end of the third quarter, HCS still trailed 40-34. But now the game was in reach.

In the fourth quarter HCS showed more heart and desire than they have shown all season. They refused to lose this game. Although not a three point shooting team anymore, HCS made 9 threes this game.Vargas was 3/4, Mike Maerzluft was 2 for 3. They rebounded and kept putting the ball back up. Jonny Barton had several key put ups as did Maerzluft. Although keyed on all night by Brethren Christian, Mike Petersen still was able to get some key rebounds. HCS had 14 turnovers but most of those were in the first half.

Coach Scott Dobyns and Assistant Coach Jared Hamilton coached the best game of their young careers. Time outs were called at the right time and a "Steal or foul" play was called for which resulted in the Warrior's Derrick Connor only making one of two at a critical juncture of the fourth quarter. Through out the second half HCS' defense was superb.Only David Frisch and Martin Simms scored above their average (4 points and 3 points respectively). Matt Metcalfe was held to 2 under, Derrick Connor was held to 4 under, Tommy Kilbane was held to 5 under and Jeff Jefferson was held to 2 under. That was key to the win tonight.

But in the end HCS' fate was in the hands of their young point guard Jordan Vargas who came through like a seasoned vet, making the three point buzzer beater that won the game for the Patriots.

So now HCS is 9-5 with one more ranking game left against New Roads on Saturday night at Hesperia.

Game Preview
Brethren Christian comes to Hesperia to take on Hesperia Christian. HCS is now 8-5 coming off a fourth place finish in the Valley Christian Academy Holiday Tournament. HCS improved greatly in the month of December, playing some of the best defense any Hesperia team has played in the last ten years. It was also the first time in five years that HCS came out of Santa Maria with a winning record, going 3-1 against very tough competition. Brethren Christian is the second of three very important ranking games. The first was Providence of Burbank, in which HCS won 56-51. Brethren Christian is the second and the final ranking game is New Roads later in the week.

Brethren Christian is a Div IVA team which plays in the Academy League. They are presently 8-4 with two games left to report. On Friday they beat Lompoc Cabrillo. The Warriors are a solid Div IV school which is thought to be one of the top 6 teams in that division. So this game will be a good test of how good the Patriots are. HCS will have to stop or slow down their three stars: #32 David Frisch, #23 Matt Metcalfe and #21 Patrick Healy. The three of them average 40 PPG. The Warriors losses were to Santa Ana, Century, Buckley and Mary Star of the Sea.

These two schools last met in 2002 in Santa Maria with Brethren Christian winning in a tight match 68-63. Brethren Christian should be favored by one point as both teams are very evenly matched. If HCS can keep the Warriors under 52 points and keep their turnovers down under 14, they should beat Brethren Christian.
