But again the telling tale of the tape for Hesperia Christian was the turnover to assist ratio which was negative at 22 to 10 compared to 14-13 against Brethren Christian. And most interesting, HCS lost by 13 points and that was exactly the number of free throws that HCS missed this evening. Other than Billy Hague and Zach Howard, the team was again miserable from the charity line. Subtract out Hague and Howard's free throw stats and the team shot 43%. One can see better shooting than that at Ric Novacks Gym in the Hesperia Park and Rec juniors league.
HCS came out strong but quickly died in the second and third quarter. The Patriots passed poorly causing turnovers from their slow telegraphed passes. Jordan Vargas, coming off a spectacular game earlier in the week had a letdown. Several times New Roads just twisted him up on the dribble. Jordan Martinson got just two rebounds and put neither back up successfully. Mike Petersen, although great on the boards, just could not get the ball to go in tonight and his free throw shooting must improve for HCS to have any success in the post season. Mike Maerzluft, normally Mr. Solid also had a bad night getting only 5 points and shooting 50% from the line. He did get 8 rebounds but quite honestly he should have gotten 12. And Jonny Barton continued his slump, not scoring at all. His only highlight was getting two blocked shots. Preston Lamarca has got to get his three point shot down as he went 0-2 this night.
As a team HCS played the third and fourth quarters like this was a rec game.Sadly, much more was on the line tonight. Tonight was a night to move to a hurried up offense at the beginning of the fourth qaurter, not that I believe they are capable of performing such an offense. I have great pride in this team and was just sad and angry to see them so miserably fail to play to their potential.
So now next Tuesday Agape League begins for the 9-6 Patriots as they open on the road at Lancaster against Antelope Valley Christian. HCS now has ten games to fix all that ails them and get ready for playoffs.
So now New Roads comes to Hesperia a much stronger team than last year's team. They are presently 8-4 with losses to only Arrowhead Christian, Beverly Hills, Oak Park and Price. They are in the middle of a very tough 4 game road trip, having played their arch- rival Crossroads (and winning), then Price last night (and losing 69-46), HCS today and JSerra later next week. They should be expected to play a full court press all night and fast break every chance they can.
The keys for a victory tonight is simply to outrebound New Roads by 10 rebounds and make 70% of their free throws. HCS cannot let #54 Travonn Brock nor #12 Galeazzo Bentivoglio get free under the basket to rebound and put up easy two foot shots. HCS needs to shoot about 30% from the three point line and limit their turnovers to only 15 this game. If HCS can do these things successfully, they can steal a win from the Jaguars.
HCS has been averaging 56 PPG while allowing their opponent to score 53 PPG. New Roads is averaging 63 PPG and their average wins are by 10 points. The Jaguars are about a seven point favorite in this game.
HCS is presently 9-5 and the New Roads game will be the Patriot's final non-conference game prior to the end of the season. It is also the final game of a three game ranking set that HCS plays.
