The Patriots were led by senior captain Mike Petersen who had 14 points, six rebounds and 4 assists. Junior Jordan Martinson provided support with eight points. Scoring, however, was well-balanced across the team with just about everyone contributing some points. Josh Ellis, Preston Lamarca, Jordan Martinson,Tyler O'Brien and Mike Petersen all scored above their scoring averages. Billy Hague had a phenomenal 9 steals making him the second best in steals in all of Southern California with 75 thefts on the year.
HCS jumped right out in front in the first half, beating the Eagles 28-13. Despite a variety of personnel rotations in the second half, HCS stayed well ahead of Antelope Valley Christian throughout the night. For the first time this season the turnover to assist ratio was positive with 14 turnovers and 17 assists.
Flaws still remain to be fixed. Three point shooting was again atrocious with 15%. Free throw shooting was only 60% but few free throws were taken (5). The only other real flaw was letting one of the Eagles' stars, DeJesus, to get 20 points which is over his average. But they did slow down their other shooters especially Chang. The Patriots only got 23 rebounds but some of that can be attributed to 50% FG shooting, allowing less rebounds to be available to get. Although Petersen got 14 points, HCS' inside game was not as strong as it should have been considering the great height advantage HCS had over Antelope Valley Christian.
So HCS is now 10-6 (1-0) and will meet Bethel Christian on Friday night at 6 pm. Bethel Christian will be a good challenge for the Patriots as they try and go undefeated in the Agape League.
Now is the time for the Patriots to fine tune for the playoffs. They play only Div V schools for the remainder of the regular season. They have not lost to a Div V school this year (they have only played three of them so far). It is time to really get all their flaws fixed. Three point shooters have got to hone that skill now. All of the team needs to learn to shoot free throws as that is what wins playoff games. The press break has got to be improved. Passing has to get crisper and faster. It would be nice to develop an efficient fast break. The inside game has to work better. HCS has to improve their two foot shots under the basket. Finally, HCS has to learn to put teams away early. Every team in the Agape League will be out for HCS. To beat HCS makes any of their seasons no matter what they do the rest of the year. Bethel Christian, Apple Valley Christian and Joshua Springs are all capable of upsetting HCS on any given night given enough breaks and a little luck. Put these teams away early and there will be no upsets! Finally the Patriots have got to go out there and just have fun. Seasons like this one are rare. Enjoy it!
