In the end the victory can be attributed to the relentless defense played by HCS. The Patriots only gave up three points to the Eagles in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the game. And HCS actually shut out Bethel Christian for 4 minutes at the end of the fourth quarter. HCS' defense may well be the best defense they have played in several years.
Hesperia Christian held most of the Eagles in check well below their season averages. Senior Mark Hicks led all Bethel Christian scorers with 13 points and Josh Thies got only four points. The Eagles, normally a good three point shooting team only had one of them this night. The only fly in the ointment for the Patriots was again a miserable 21 turnovers for the game to only 9 assists. Jordan Vargas, not normally a rebounding star for HCS, had a career high of 7 rebounds this game. And kudos go out to Billy Hague shooting four critical free throws in the final minutes of the game to ice the victory for HCS.
Hesperia Christian now is 11-6 (2-0) and next plays Joshua Springs at home. Bethel Christian now drops to 8-5 (1-1).
HCS has not lost to Bethel Christian in anyone's memory. They beat the Eagles last season in their first meeting 73-45.
This year's version of the Bethel Christian Eagles is the strongest team they have had in years. Both Josh Thies and Mark Hicks can easily score 23-28 points a game. Thies gets his points off of three pointers and cherry picked layups. Both Hicks and John Ustares are some of the best passers in the Agape League this season. They specialize in throwing quick threaded passes inside to the Eagle big men for back door plays. Keefauver, Vakay and Bradley are the biggest men Bethel Christian has had in years. All three are between 6-1 and 6-3.
HCS is going to have to test Bethel Christian's big men and take it inside because of HCS' height advantage. The Patriot guards will have to ensure that Thies does not get any easy baskets off of cherry picking. HCS must stop any passes from going to the Eagles big men inside. HCS will need to outrebound Bethel Christian. And as always, Bethel will have to foul HCS and the Patriots better be ready to make free throws.
Bethel Christian is averaging about 62 PPG but also allows its opponents to get 56 PPG. HCS on the other hand scores 56 PPG and allows its opponents to score 52 PPG. Height advantage goes to the Patriots. Three point advantage to the Eagles. Speed goes to Bethel Christian while rebounding to the Patriots. Tonight's game will be the fourth game this week for Bethel Christian so that Bethel Christian may be tired. HCS is probably about 3 point favorites in this championship match.
